But what was the icelandians before they were independent? They must have been Niregians or something?

And Icelandic (the language), isn't it wrong to call it that, isn't it the same as Norse?

A last thing: shouldn't this be in the history forum?

EDIT: It is moved (right now or was it moved already?)

As I said, there was no "before they were independent". Iceland was never under Norwegian control (not before the 13th century anyway), it was independent from the beginning.

Not really. Modern Icelandic is different from Old Norse, but not so much that modern Icelanders can read the sagas. It's like Danish and Swedish today.

we could try to move it back with a few well placed (and bosomy) viking girl pix. :D

i enjoy how a good informative discussion, without rancour, emerges from the silly murk that the OT forum often is.:)

We could always start discussing vikings i Eu2 period and try to get it moved there;) and then on a tour on the whole forum:D

So they were independent from the first time they came there? It was never a colony?

I do not think any viking colonies was started that way, by a mohther country that is. They was more or less always set up as indepent operations, not reporting to any country or king.

Viking colonies

You can see the Viking colonies like the Greek colonies during the classic Greek period. Not like colonies in the modern meaning that a state conquer a pice of land and rule that.
This is like people go away in order to find new "empty" land where to settle.

The Norwegian colonies on ie. Iceland were like case two.
