“Ace of Spades” is the sixth free update for Steel Division: Normandy 44. It will feature not one, but two of the free content announced in our roadmap: two cosmetic Aces and the first Attack/Defense scenarios. Let’s check what it’s all about.

Free Attack/Defense scenarios: In Breakthrough, the first available Attack/Defense set of scenarios, the Attacker only controls a small portion of the field during the deployment phase, and his mission is to take and hold the objective. On the other side, the Defender controls the largest part of the map at the beginning of the game, and must retain control of the objective and inflict enough losses to the Attacker’s forces.

While playing an Attack/Defense scenario, you will no longer receive your requisition points every minute, but get all the phase’s points at the beginning of this one. You will be able to play Breakthrough in solo and multiplayer. Breakthrough situations will be available in 1v1 on 4 variants of existing maps, playable both in attack and defense.

Check the blog article dedicated to Breakthrough right here!

Free Ace pack: This pack introduces two new exclusive ace models:
  • For the 3rd Armored, Lafayette 'Wardaddy' Pool: the greatest American tank ace up to this day with 12 confirmed tank kills and another 258 armored vehicles destroyed.
  • For the 91. Luftlande, Alexander Uhlig: one of the first German paratrooper.

Keep a look on our blog, MadMat will have a lot to tell about these two aces.

Ace of Spades will also feature a bunch of fixes and a couple of new features, which will be detailed on release, on October 26th.

Im looking forward to the defense/attack. It will provide a welcomed change to the present meeting engagements.
Brings out memories of Close Combat games even more now.
Curious how long before multiplayer attack - defence will be available... ?

Excited for the att/def mode.

As I read it though the divisional requisition pt income will not affect the income in the att / def mode. Is it true? So regardless of his division an a ttacker will have the same income in a given phase?

Just to be clear, the first version of Attack/Defense is only for 1v1 games, correct?

When will a larger game version be rolled out?

And thanks for continuing to improve the game!

I suspect that's why the battlegroups involved are a more limited selection.

Not really for me, as a near-exclusive 2v2-er, plus there's the same concerns about lobby fragmentation and how the different deployment rules make balancing the divisions trickier that I had with Closer Combat. The idea's neat, though, even if I think Conquest is a near-perfect game mode.

If Eugen Software's interested in experimenting with multiple scenario modes like this and Closer Combat, though, and if Steel Division ever has a sequel, one thought:

I think the idea of multiple setups like this would work out a lot better if it were built into the matchmaking. It's not as common for RTSes, but in games like World of Tanks, Mechwarrior Online, and Heroes of the Storm, you just queue up and get thrown into one of several possible scenarios. If the push for matchmaking as the primary way of finding games were stronger in Steel Division 2 and it catches on, maybe something like that'd be a good way to diversify the play experience. When players select game modes, even in games with working matchmaking and larger player bases, everyone tends to clump to one or two modes.

Of the other hand, by doing so you do risk annoying people who don't like some of those game modes, and potentially having them just quit if they get a mode they don't like.

really looking forward to this but i think the only thing that can really change the playerbase numbers is coop. For example in sc2 it saved the game. You give new players a way to not get crushed and still have fun with friends, you give them more time to learn and you hold them in the game so that they put enough hours into it without leaving, also it is a much better entry for mp than campaign most of the time.

You can already play skirmish co-op?

Any balancing will be in this patch? Balance in 1x1 ranked is in pretty dire state (if you don't want to lose every time, ofc).
What exactly is unbalanced? Each division is going to have it's own strengths and weaknesses against other divisions and each map can in itself make a huge difference to how effective your chosen division is going to perform.
