Is it possible that Paradox might be truly benevolent House Lords, supporting and enriching their vassals instead of bleeding them dry as so many corporate overlords are wont to do?
It's strange to think, in this era of media empires devouring everything in sight... but I'm actually feeling a wee bit optimistic. That doesn't happen very often.
Something that I did not sufficiently highlight yet (from my parsing of the last Paradox Interim Report to Shareholders) was that 40% of all games actively developed by Paradox and it’s Gaming Studios,
but not yet announced, are evaluated and cancelled before they are ever announced/been made public.
As a matter of fact, just last Quarter two such pre-Announcement Games were cancelled, freeing up those Studios to put their resources and people against their next game development attempt.
Think of that for a moment please...
Paradox regularly underwrites the failures of its Gaming Studios and at some level of coordination between the two entities (Paradox and the studio in question) move that studio toward a successful future.
I do not know this to be the case, but perhaps Mitch was in Stockholm this week for one such GO / NO GO evaluation of one of HBS’s “Special Projects...”
Perhaps, perhaps not. I could very well be wrong here concerning the purpose of Mitch’s visit to Stockholm.
But what I am not wrong about is that 40% of Paradox games are cancelled for very good reason, and that two such games were cancelled last quarter.
Also, it is just possible that HBS has already been the recipient of just such an underwriting of a failed game.
It always struck me as noteworthy that Kiva, Mitch and a few others made reference to “Secret Projects” (plural.) it is just smart business sense to move HBS forward with multiple teams working their own “Project.”
Some Projects will succeed and no doubt some fail, but HBS now has a mechanism fo be VERY ambitious with one Project and maybe somewhat conservative with a second Project, knowing that they’ll get their shot at hitting a Homerun... or at the very least, falling back to a bunt and Runner on First.
And I like all that ALOT!
