They said expansions, not DLC. So I'm thinking we're looking more at like Sword of Islam type content than just portrait or music packs. My guess is that they'll release one of those along with 1.06 (adding new combat mechanics), then following that with the second expansion.

Pagans would be obvious one, although I'm not too sure how unique they would be. I can see a Republics one for, with trade and maritime features added. Then maybe Theocracies, with Saints, Religious Artifacts and Cardinals?

And after that, I don't really know.

Pandas?

Easy predictions;

-Each DLC will come with a free patch.
-They'll be two months apart.

Features:
-Playable Republics with unique content and mechanics. Everyone gets new mechanics related to republics but only buyers can play as one.
-Playable Bishops with unique content and mechanics. Everyone gets new mechanics related to theocracies but only buyers can play as one. Includes Papacy overhaul and playable Pope.
-Massive rework of the ERE and the Orthodox religion in general with historical differentiation between the ERE and the Catholics. I'm going to guess the only way to sell this as DLC will be to 'disable' Orthodoxy for non-buyers though, because it needs to remain one code base. That might be a bit of hurdle. Maybe they'll choose to patch this instead of selling it for this reason.
-Same thing we just got for Muslims, but for Pagans and Mongols. Comes with a nice map expansion towards Mongolia and eastern Persia.

Of course each DLC starting with SOI will cause new issues and change game balance quite a bit, so its predictable that each new DLC's patch will come with countless balancing and bug fixes for the previous DLC changes. By the time the next 4 are out, we will surely have a full expansion's worth of new features compared to the base game. Glad to see this game alive.

A map expansion would be nice if there was playable Mongols.

A few more provinces in Europe would have been nice, particularly some fixes/additions in Germany. We're only getting another Italian province in the 1.06 patch.

Yeah, but not in a DLC.

The game lack the County of Bar. :(
Bar would be good, yeah.

You'll never be paying for more provinces in a DLC, they'll always be added for free in a patch. You only have to pay for the DLC if you want to play as different religions or want access to new music/graphics.

I hope the next expansion is about pagans, and a cultural overhaul on the byzantine and Russ, ( i believe its the cultural structure, not the religion that's not correctly displayed, along with a few minor changes).

1: Pagan expansion - Probably the most desired expansion along with Islam based on what I've seen in many threads. Paradox is Swedish and will naturally want to show a bit of patriotism :D which is good because Mjolnir demands blood!

2: Republics and theocracies - obviously very Italian themed (don't think they'll be developed as much as the Muslims as there aren't many areas with these govt. types, so they'll be piled together. We'll probably see a college of cardinals too)

3: Orthodox? The only problem I see with that is the level of development they already have with their clear similarities to Catholicism. Also, as was mentioned before it will be hard for Paradox to make them unplayable for non-dlc buyers. This may very well turn out to instead focus on choices as king - it may allow leaders to be more proactive in their kingdom and allow for more complex relationships with acquaintances.

4: Some form of time rollback/forward to expand the timeframe of the game.

I don't think sprite packs count as "expansions", and would have been more plausible had the word 'dlc' specifically been used in the interview. Also, I hardly see how an African face sprite pack could be "(planned) in much detail". My money's on these four all being SoI scale expansions. We'll get more sprite and music packs of course, but they won't be among the four mentioned in the interview.

I don't think the developers that work on the game mechanics are the same as the guys planning music and visual DLC's. They have marketing and artists for that stuff. So when Doomdark mentions 4 expansions it have to be something like playable pagans and republics.

Maybe they even will surprise us with something entirely new?

From what I've seen from Paradox, I think it will be added playability, SoI style, for Pagan/Priests/Republics/Mongols or maybe some kind of fine tuning to crusades and holy wars and even improvements to empires.

In my opinion, what they should do, however, is expansions covering the following:

1) Naval combat and/or improvement of land combat: more martial traits and martial effects, naval commanders, battle orders, bigger role for marshalls/commanders, improvements to mechanics like attrition and war score.
2) Some form of religious expansion: more learning traits and effects, bigger role for religion and conversion, bigger role for antipope, expansion and fine tuning of crusade mechanic, probably some novelty bonuses/penalties religion related - canonization, saint-style titles, events - playable pagans and maybe playable bishoprics and papacy.
3) Added playability for mongols: Golden Horde playbility, starting scenario in proper date, horde-style battle mechanics and attrition and so on.
4) Overall improvement for empires.

I said maybe playable religious leaders, but I don't think it should be done, same with republics, because they mostly were not hereditary. In order to do so, it would have to be possible to play landless characters and that kind of breaks the game, because there's no more game over. Maybe add some more interaction with them, I don't know.

But right now, if they know anything, they should focus on naval combat. That would be awesome.

Imagine how awesome some of the multiplayer games could be if some people were playing as dynastic landowning families and some were playing as the theoretical dynastic merchant/banking families.
