newbie: should i purchase V2 vanilla or HOD

Hi,

Probably a stupid question but wanted to double-check. I am assuming HOD does not include V2 original but can be played without purchase of the original. If my assumptions are correct, which one should i purchase? Does it make sense to start with V2 vanilla or should i delve straight into HOD?

Your assumption is incorrect. You will need to purchase the original game, and then add the expansions in sequential order up to HOD to get the full game. This is because this is an older game that used the old expansion model. So, the vanilla game + A House Divided + Heart of Darkness to get the basic full game. The other DLC's add graphics and music.

I would personally recommend getting the basic full game at the least, but I'm prejudiced.

Additionally, most of the user mods (such as user expansion packs etc) will require the full game + AHD + HOD. Get it all, you won't be sorry.

The base game is quite playable, but the AHD and HOD expansions not only added features, but patched a number of problems with the base game. I'm still playing the original for lack of a non-Steam source for the expansions (Amazon has had them listed as out of stock since last summer), because the loader for the Steam expansions won't recognize the original CD game or other non-Steam downloads.
