It will most likely just end, yes. Then if Paradox ever takes another shot at a Cold War era game, you might be able to port your save to that game to continue playing.

That was one of the first thoughts I had when I discovered this game last week, the logical expansionpack would be "HOI - Cold War". Although the cold war is more espianage and diplomacy than hot war.

I like the idea too, the only issue with that kind of game is how does it play out with the arrival of nuclear weapons? The reason the major powers never went to war during the Cold War was primarily down to the presence of nuclear weapons.

Whilst it would be false, it would be interesting if the game continued post-WW2 with a 'no nuke' policy for the whole of the 20th century. That would present a very interesting open ended scenario that would get people thinking, i.e. a major struggle that hasn't already been scripted by history.

Then they could put in the cold war in hoi4 instead as an expansion. and after that they could make it even longer with the modern world expansion. that would be very fun if they could do this

HOI is the wrong platform for such a game - it's more a Vicky stile game with sphere of influences, power projection and keeping the internal peace. Mixing that into HOI would not work.

I agree with Premu. If you could willy nilly drop a nuke during the cold war without some kind of "threat level" mechanic (similar to declaring war in hoi3 but harder to access) it wouldn't be very stressful it would just be more hoi.

Also if you take it to the NTH degree and artificially limit nukes because of this it stops being in the vein of HOI or EU really because you don't have full control.

Now that they're doing a new Clausewitz it might be it's own game someday, (and I'd buy it if they made this expansion) but I can't wrap my head around how they'd make it worth trying.

Don't know if you are into boardgames but there is a good one called "Twighlight Struggle" that is on the Cold War and was very popular. In the boardgame world it works very much the same as the war game genere but mainly uses "influence" counters instead of say "troops" (although you still would have wars in the cold war ie Korea, Vietnam, Afghanastan, Isreali/Egypt etc.) So you have a turn based game, which I believe HOI has, and move mainly influence counters around the map and some military counters. Influence determines if that nation is under communist or democratic influence and a revolt occurs after a determined amount depending on what country. Anyway, I can envision this as a PC game but considering I have never played a HOI yet maybe I'm off the mark thinking it can be a continuation. I could see a huge international military trade and manipulation between countries and the CIA, KGB, MOSAD etc

Below is the board game, not sure about you guys but I can easily see it turned into PC quite easily.

Edit: Paradox have a cold war game out called "Supreme Commander: Cold War". Looks very dated though.
