Hi all,

Can anybody give me advice on my current situation please? This is what I am facing at the moment:

- I am the happy Duke of Brittany, with 1 son and 1 daughter.
- Under the law: Aganatic-Cognatic Gavelkind, I take it that titles will be devided amongst my children?
- However, as it is now, my son inherits everything and my daughter nothing (they are both adults btw). How come?

And second but equally important question:

- My daughter has a Matrilineal Marriage to the heir of the Duchy of Tuscany.
- She and her husband are in my court at the moment but have no landed titles.
- What will happen if her husband becomes the duke of Tuscany? Will it become part of my Duchy? Will my daughter leave the realm and be out of my control? And if that happens, how do I prevent this?
- They already have a son, who will then probably become the new heir to Tuscany and who will be of my Dynasty. Will he join Brittany when he takes the Duchy?

I would like to see Tuscany become part of my little empire to be of course, but I'm yet quite clueless on how inheritance works..can anyone shed some light ? :)

Gavelkind only splits between sons. If there is only one son he gets everything. But if there are no sons but multiple daughters, i believe it splits up.

For other question you will not inheret Tuscany unless you kill your son so that your daughter becomes your heir, and then her son in turn will be her heir. When you become this character you will be duke of both duchies.

Sons go always before daughters if you have one son he will inherite even if you would have daughters. If you don't have sons at all only then daughters will inherite in Agnatic-Cognative law.

No, he will inherite it and become the ruler. Your daughter will leave with her husband. You can't really prevent it as the title is same level as you so that duchy can't be anyway your vassal. When his son inherites he will be the ruler and he will not be your vassal.

ok thanks for clearing that up!

So there will be an independant Duchy of Tuscany, ruled by someone of my Dynasty (my grandson) ? Does that mean that for instance when my character dies, and my son dies, I end up playing as him?
And also, does this mean a firm alliance between Tuscany and Brittany? Or does the AI ignore the fact that both Duchies are from the same dynasty?

Part 1: Under Agnatic-Cognatic succession females only inherit if there are no elegible male heirs. If no male heir exists the female with the oldest male son inherits first. In gavelkind succession all of your land is divided between your children equally. In your case your son inherits everything because of the "male preferred succession".

Part 2: When your daughter's husband inherits the duchy of Tuscany she will indeed leave our court, because her vested interest will be that of her husband. Do not worry about this you already married her matrillineally with a duke, she got you the best you could have hoped. Now she will create a Cadet Branch of your dynasty in Tuscany. No your grandson will not join Brittany unless you make your daughter your heir at which time your grandson will inherit both duchies at the time both of his parents die. If you do not make your daughter your heir, your grandson and his progeny will only be eternal allies that will allow you to call them into helping you in your wars. Keep in mind that you can only call allies to war if they are vassals of your own liege or if they are independent.

More thanks! Since Tuscany is HRE and I'm independant, I can kiss any help goodbye then :) Still its comforting to know my bloodline finds a home in Italy!

When your duke dies, your son will rule Brittany, and you will play Brittany. When the ruler of Tuscany dies, your daughter's husband will rule independent Tuscany. This is not order-dependent.

Eventually your daughter's husband will die, and if they have had children, Tuscany will be ruled by someone from your dynasty, which should result in an alliance, not that Tuscany will necessarily honor it. I don't pay much attention to alliance nuances, but I'm guessing you have one already.

If you kill your son, your daughter's husband will inherit Tuscany, your daughter will inherit Brittany, and one of their children may inherit both.

You are unlikely to inherit Tuscany while your son's line survives.

If you let things take their course, and eventually form a kingdom, if your relatives thrive in Tuscany, you can eventually invite one of them who has a claim on Tuscany to your court, then press that claim, and have Tuscany as a vassal.
