Newbie Question: Playable Countries

Hey all,
I just found out about EU a few days ago, and from reading through this forum and a bunch of previews on the web, i must say that I'm hooked. I can't wait until the game comes out here in Canada, but in the meantime, i've got a few questions:

1) What countries are playable in the game? I have yet to find a complete listing, and i've heard mention on this board of even asian and african nations in the game. Are all these playable? Do you need to hack to game/edit files to play as them?

2) How much of the Earth is actually 'mapped' in the game? In other words, what places on the earth can't be explored, colonized etc.?

8 nations are playable. they are: Poland, France, Spain, Russia, England, Portugal, Turkey, and the eighth playable country depends on the version you have. Swedish version has Sweden as the eighth nation and German version has Austria as the eighth playable country.
you can also play as other nations if you hack the files.

Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and south America are explorable .I haven't heard of people discovering Australia or Antarctica.

also, with just a little quick editing, you can play any minor in the game. On another note, does anybody know the 8th major for the north american release?

Actually, the south-eastern parts of Australia are explorable. The other parts are under permanent Terra Inkognita though.

And in reply to your question brendiaz, apparently, there are supposed to be 12 playable countries. This is from the Strategy First Website (the guys releaseing it here in North America):

'Play France, England, Portugal, Spain, Holland, Poland-Lithuania, Habsburg, Prussia, Russia, Venice, Turkey or Sweden and compete for wealth and glory.'

Though i'm not sure if this means 8 playable in the Grand Campaign and 4 in other campaigns or 12 at once. Just two weeks to find out thoough!

Welcome! Like you I only discovered the game a little while ago (though I have been suffering about ten days now!). The pain will increase for you as each day goes by, so enjoy! My understanding of the playables is that exactly which 8 are playable by humans varies by scenario. As written above, you caan however edit some simple text files to play whomsoever you please, and that editing process IS pretty simple and explained in several threads throughout this forum. You can also go to Oranje's EU site and look at his faq section which has it listed there.

Exactly!
There can also be senarios made for less then 8 players, but any country in the game is playabale if available in a scenario.
