Yeah, you can say I'm back. Naturally I'd say that I was on the forums, just here and there from time to time but my new releases grew thin and I didn't properly follow this thread for some time. On a side note, since forums moved to XenForo I can't get reliable notifications for my threads. In the old forums, I was duly spammed with notification e-mails, currently the coverage is spotty.
I don't know about the future of NWO, at least I don't have any better idea than a couple of months ago. The truth is I don't play DH lately so I don't have any natural interest in developing it much further (on a side note, I had a chance of trying HoI4 - it has some interesting changes and has much better starting point than HoI3 but it has a long way to go to come near the quality of HoI2 and its siblings). In the mod, there are a couple of points that could be tackled but let's see:
- there is a lot of events that probably require fixes to triggers, or redesigning to be more dynamic - but I made them so long ago so it's hard to me to recap what idea I had behind them, how do they work, not to mention that the effects may be negligible
- I never researched post-war commanders and most of ministers are 'blank' too - that's an immense and unrealistic task; doing HoS/HoG pairs was a nice history trip for me once but let's face it, the amount of research/copy-paste work is disproportionate to the end result (limiting this headcount in HoI4 is one of design decision I can understand, even if they went IMO a bit too far)
- teaching AI to make use of the tech tree - yes, I got the tech tree wholesale from the CWTT project and this comes to haunt me because I really never properly 'felt' this tree - I knew effects of specific files and lines of code, I even made some small changes to them but it's hard for me to dig deeper and check what AI countries should make use of what brigades and when, if their stats are reasonable or not. At first I was wary of having to keep my mod constantly updated with the changes to CWTT tree, now I'm just not committed enough to sweep through these files that I haven't ever properly went through.
- adopting NWO to DH 1.05 - that's one thing I'd feel strongly inclined to do so that the mod doesn't get completely left behind. But I think there's no word on the new patch anywhere, for a long time, I didn't even check the devs for any news on this front :O
- going with NWO forward and making it for HoI4 - firstly, I'd have to buy the game and I'm not really eager to do this when I know I won't be playing the game soon. Probably will give it a chance at some discount - you know, I think it has potential and I'm not against dumbing... streamlining the game a bit but it has to be done right. And it takes a lot of time and resilience to make a big successful mod and I know I won't have it in sufficient quantities anytime soon. And maybe, since Paradox seems to be pushing countless DLCs for its prime releases lately, the post-war period will get some attention, at least in the form of quasi-Doomsday expansion (which, let's not forget, was the very base of my NWO modding efforts).
To sum it up, the future doesn't look too rosy but I don't rule out doing something for the mod if it's important or I feel like it. Unless someone else feels up to challenge with one of the points above and maybe there's time for some NWO Community Edition?
