Proudly presenting the 3D model for the Royal Swedish Navy's Visby class corvette, one of the world's most stealthy warships.

Visby_maya_screen_RED.jpg

For its size, the 640 tonne ship carries a formidable punch, spearheaded by eight RBS-15 Mk2 anti-ship missiles - 250 km range - and a Bofors 57mm cannon. The corvette has a modern sensor array for any threat, even a towed array sonar system.

The Visby has one obvious vulnerability: its weak air defense, especially after the Umkhonto SAM batteries were cancelled. The stealthy corvette will rely on hiding in the shallow waters along the Swedish Baltic coast, waiting to strike at the opportune moment.

The corvette carries a helipad but no hangar.

Looks good. I guess this will be Swedens proud surface contribution to the game.
Will you include the Gotland submarine or the A26 submarine?

I find it interesting that our goverment didnt want to pay 1 billion SEK for some kind of air defense for our navy, but will gladly throw 100 billion at the Eurocrisis.
Im not a big fan of huge military spending but I think that the navy could´ve get some SAMs after all.

I had the privilege of seeing one of these in Dock in Edinburgh. What on earth it was doing there I don't know but it was a amazing ship really beautiful. The cannon impressed me mightily.

We'll include the Gotland.

I think most NWAC players will find that any surface ship without proper air defense is very vulnerable, and that would also apply to any real life war against a serious adversary.

I wonder if they wouldn't chuck them in if the world started becoming a bit more unsafe. With the right incentives things can go really fast.

I'm actually surprised that the Swedish Navy doesn't have a single SAM system deployed. Not even the lowly RBS 70.
Actually, if you feel like upping the Visbys AA capabilities fitting them with RBS 70 wouldn't be much of a stretch.

Or perhaps you guys want to have it a a more specialiced unit for gameplay reasons? It makes more fun with diverse units than units being able to do everything (though a low probability, short range AA probably wont make that much difference anyway)

As a sidenote what AA ssytem does the Skjolds have? I know they cannot use their mistral launchers while at sea so I guess it the gun which is the main defence?

Ok that sounds reasonable (there are rumours about an RC version being installed but I'm not sure if this will allow for sea launch) .

As I said its probably better for gameplay as well that you have some vessels good at one thing but bad at another. Hearing what you did with skjold I suggest you put some equivalent system on the Visby use the RBS-70 stats as suggested by Thiel. (Just so you dont irritate the Swedes :p)

Yes, exactly. It is important that the units have very different strengths and weaknesses. Since ASW work is mostly down to helicopters, this capability mostly boils down to "how many helos do we carry". But the anti-air capabilities are vastly different. An RBS-70 is clearly better than nothing, but it is not an area denial weapon like the Standard missiles or S-300.

But it will take down that helicopter that's shadowing her and annoy the hell out of the low flying MPA that's trying to identify her.
Plus, if the enemy isn't carrying stand off weapons the mere sight of one or two rockets coming your way is enough to unnerve even the best of pilots. As I understand it the majority of the Sea Darts launched during the Falklands War were launched to do just that, since the Argentine pilots were flying outside of their engagement envelope.
(Let's face it, everybody hear would poop their pants if they saw a fire breathing telephone pole racing towards them)

First of all I want to say that i'm really impressed with what you all have accomplished with this game, it looks awesome....and I can't wait to get my hand on it :)

However I noticed something with the Visby you have on display here and its that this would be the Visby ver.4 and during this feburary Visby ver.5 just rolled out from the shipyard...and well to make a long story really short here's how the final(hopefully) ver. of the visby http://blogg.forsvarsmakten.se/marinbloggen/2012/02/07/hms-visby-sjosatt/

Thank you, Nylander,

The Visby we have in the game already has the RBS-15 Mk 3 system, and it will also be able to carry a helicopter, so I think we're reasonably up-to-date. We're not modelling the new ventilation system but I trust our virtual crew will be comfortable during actual gameplay :)
