New tool - Object browser

I've made an Object Browser!. works with eug, inc, tech and event files and everything else that uses paradox object format (not csv).

I've added some minor save game editing for HoI

It also works with EUII, (and probably EU1), as long as you go to Edit/Preferences and disables 'Enable HoI specific extensions"

What does it do specifically, joben? I am always so interested in utilities!!

I don't know if he's still around here since this was posted over 10 months ago. It's basically a viewer for scenario and savegame files that parses the objects and displays them kind of like regedit with a tree-view on the left. I only wish it came with source code. I really want some good savegame parsing code to use as a basis for other utilities or just one-shot mod programs.

jdrou, is there anything specific you'd like to do with the savegame file? I'm toying with the idea of starting to write a "eug" parser next week (probably fairly simple to just pull out a little data quickly).

Nothing specific; just every so often I want to pull some data that I could easily do with 'grep' if the objects were condensed to one line each.

This tool looks pretty useful if it was finished. It edits as well as views HoI (and EU2) files. It reads province.csv to allow you to see details of the provinces controlled by each country among other things. Unfortunately the right window doesn't seem to have any way to scroll.
EDIT: most obvious application is a simple report of every country's resource & supply stockpiles, manpower pool, etc.

This tool could be usable; you apparently need to run it full-screen and hide your taskbar.

Well, I think one problem is that a save game file has so much information it's hard to know where you even want to start.

What I find clumsy is if I want to check something like a country's oil stockpile and I search for oil I need to backtrack to see which country that is. Clumsy.

I'll give it further thought next week. I just looked at joben's utility and it is really slick. Too bad you can't easily extract a group of data from it.

First search for e.g. "tag = USA" and make sure, it is really the "country = {"-line, then " oil ". I know how to do that now .

Sure, but it's clumsy. "tag = USA" shows up in almost every country's diplomacy section and adding a couple of spaces in front of the string just cuts down the false positives but doesn't eliminate them. Something like this tool makes things much easier.

My method takes me about 10 seconds to get to oil. The important thing is always to start a search from top. When you start to scroll up and down manually, you will get nowhere. It is annoying.

Yes, but it basically takes a double search... first search for the country then search for the sub-item you are interested in (praying you remember the correct term and spelling).
