I'd personally say that the US is a good starting nation: you're relatively isolated, have good RGOs and expansion opportunities, and because you're not in Europe / Eurasia you don't need to care about crises. Not to mention your population expands drastically. Other people would say that Belgium (industrialization tutorial), UK (start off on top of the world), or Prussia (OP military) are also good options.

If you want some good strats, here are some basics:

- State capitalism is a good way to jumpstart industrialization.

- If you're not a great power, try to get ito a sphere of influence this ensures you have a supply of resources. A method I use to to augment this is to de-automate my trade tab for RGOs I need, as my factories tend to constantly run into supply issues.

-If you are a GP, play the sphere game. Gives you resources without having to exert direct control over the area.

-when you industrialize, build consumer goods to ensure demand. Steel and cement are also good, as are machine parts.

This thread goes into it a bit more in-depth: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/finally-got-the-game.994423/

As with most PDS games, there isn't really a point or goal, besides whatever one you set for yourself.

you reload to a previous save and wait for manifest destiny be be available, giving you cores across the entirety of northern mexico, which will both give free persistent Cbs on mexico and also raise your jingoism like crazy.

To help raise it, call new elections and get those events which let you raise militarism in your nation, you won't ever not have a democractic party leadership til the 1850s anyways
