I just started playing this game today. I played a lot of Rome: Total War, but have never played any games in this series before so I am a bit lost in some rights.

For one thing I have no clue how to take full control of a new province. I win a battle and siege/assault their fort until there is nobody left, but then the province is still under mutual control I think (the enemy's colour with my colour of striped lines over top). Usually they offer me the province in exchange for peace, but now that this is their last province they obviously are not just going to hand it over. This seems to be an odd system, considering if you are at war with someone you wouldn't likely want to stop the war just because you received one of their provinces.

Also, I want to use my trireme to go accross the sea, but I don't know how to get my armies in and out of the boats.

I think I'm learning most of the other basics as I go, but all the helo I can get would greatly be appreciated.

If your enemy has only one province and you capture it, you can annex them. Click on the captured enemy province, find the Diplomacy button on the bottom (near the Recruitment, Construction, etc buttons). Then, click the "Take Action" button, choose "Sue for Peace" and select Annex. It's not a perfect system, but it works for balance etc.

Be careful, though: the "international" (I hesitate to use that term in this timeframe, but it's close enough) community does not look kindly upon empires snapping up small, defenseless states. This is represented by your Reputation (aka Badboy) rating which, when you go over your limit, may cause other nations to declare war on you.

In regards to transporting troops, you need one ship per cohort of troops. This is not like RTW where one ship can "transport" an entire army (I always justified this by saying that the ship is just an escort for a larger number of un-represented transports ;)), you actually have to have space in your fleet to be able to carry all those troops.

When they offer you one province, you don't have to accept. Instead, decline their offer, and immediately go to the Diplomacy screen and click on 'Sue for Peace' (as Cheexsta said). You can only Annex them if they just have one province, but otherwise you can go into the negotiations screen and make them a counter-offer.

You have a War Score listed, which is mostly based on how much of their country you occupy. You can select provinces to annex, and other benefits such as enforcing a tribute payment; each of these costs a certain amount of war score. You can only demand to annex a province if your forces already control it, or if you have a Core on it. Submit the offer, and the enemy decides whether to accept.

This is a random chance... but if your demands are a lot less than your war score, you get a bonus to them agreeing; if you demand more than the war score, they're unlikely to agree (but there's a small chance they will anyway). If you've completely defeated their army and drained all their money and manpower, that also gives a big bonus to whether they'll accept. Restrictions: you can never go above 100 War Score in your demands, and you have to leave them with one province (their capital) if they start with more than one.

Thanks for the help!

I'm still having problems with the navy though. In Total War you could only board a ship if it was in port and in this game it seems to be the opposite, only when it's not in port. I finally managed to get onto my ships, but now I can't get off in the enemy province.
Everywhere I go just gives me an "x". I can't click on the port, or the province or the army, with either my fleet or army. I have no clue what to do.

To have an army board a ship, make sure the ships are at sea that connects with the land province that has your army stationed. Once the ships are at sea, left click on your army then right click on the sea tile that holds your ships for the army to start "marching" to the ships. Once the army is on the ships, click on the ships in the sea tile and you will see a new box next to all your ships with the number of units that are currently boarded. Move the ships to your desired sea tile, click on this new box which will activate the army and right click to the land province that is connected to the sea province. The selected army will then march onto the land province of your choosing.

Hopefully that helps.

Also keep in mind that you can only land troops on a province that you control, or you have military access to (diplomatic action, "ask for military access"), or if you are at war with the nation that owns that province, or if that province isn't owned by anyone.

That was the problem I think, I was trying to get onto an enemy province. I can get back to my own provinces just fine, but I can't get onto any enemy provinces, even the one I am at war with. This seems kind of absurd because if I am at war with someone I should be able to attack them by sea, and not have to go all the way around on foot or to negotiate for military access.

You can land troops into enemy provinces. Stop the fleet offshore, select the troops and right-click in the province. The cursor will display a little sword when you are pointing to an acceptable spot.

Try to land in an empty province, though. There is a severe combat penalty for landing in an occupied province.

Now I know what was wrong, I had annexed Greece and as a result the end of the war with them also ended all my other wars with their allies, so I couldn't land in their provinces anymore since they were no longer enemies.

I started with the earliest time period as Rome to start off simple, but there is no action. I have no enemies and just control most of Italy (thus all of my core provinces), so I have no Casus Belli to attack anyone and the only thing I do is fight with barbarians in the north. I can't even colonise the north because I need to wait for citizen levels of 50 in adjacent provinces, which seems to be taking forever.

The easiest way to gain a CB is by assassinating a country's general or by inducing rebellion in one of their provinces. Usually the target country will either throw the envoy in jail or kill him (if you were caught.) You get a cb then and can DOW without a stability hit.

Ummm, i think you might have misunderstood something. The Civ.level has to be at 50% in a province from which you want to colonize.
