I've only ever played the ‘vanilla’ version of HOI2DD before but just downloaded GIP and now looking at trying some others.
CORE looks interesting but I have a few questions.

CORE uses individual subs, torpedo boats and DDs not flotillas as in the vanilla, yes?
What is the reasoning behind this and does this give better naval battles? (eg. Battle of the Atlantic)
Are there not now too many units to move for the computer and human players?
Torpedo boats and DDs did work in flotillas usually.

Any there any campaigns besides the 1936 one?

What’s the AI like compared to DAIM?

Is the domestic populations use of resources taken into account? Stopping big stockpiles of resources.

No problem. Our CORE in Color graphics pack is compatible with GIP, by the way (you need our graphics pack as well though for CORE). And as we use moddir you can install CORE in the regular Vanilla directory. It might be advisable to make a backup of your gfx folder, due to the dummies we have to include (game engine limitations). But apart from that there's little risk, if any.

Correct.

One of the reasons is to make it more interesting and add flavour (naming schemes and such). Overall it works better than the Vanilla setup, we think. You have a point regarding torpedoboats, but those are to be scrapped in the upcoming 0.40, actually, to be replaced with CVL's and CVE's.

No. Getting the 1936 covered is providing enough challenge as it is, given our massive changes compared to Vanilla.

seane said:

Better than Vanilla, weaker than DAIM. The upcoming 0.40 will include migration to a TRP-style AI though, so that will imply a massive boost in AI strength.

Yes, we have a completely revised resource distrubition, usage, rares scarcity, autarky events and civilian energy/oil spoilage. Plus Nuclear plants don't give an energy boost (historically the first nuclear energy production happened only in 1957 or 1958).

We do include a manual with the CORE install, so if you want more info on CORE design philosophy that will give you some insight. And feel free to ask, either here or on the CORE forum (www.terranova.dk). :)

Thanks for the prompt answers.

Shame about losing the torpedo boats as they did play a part in WW2, more so than some others units in the game.
No chance of keeping them as flotillas?

Also can you install CORE and then still play vanilla if need be. Or should i back up the old file completely?

Nope - we're running out of model numbers as it is. In game terms the effects were minimal to begin with, but they did add some nice flavour.

Yes you can install CORE and still play Vanilla. The only exception is perhaps the graphics, as we need to install additional dummy files into the Vanilla directory structure (unfortunately, and due to game engine limitations). As such you might end up with the odd 'CORE2 dummy image' when playing Vanilla. For now (0.30) it's not much of a problem, but as we've moved on to covering major minor nations in 0.40 it does become more of an issue (with over a 1000 dummies already needed). Other than that it works fine. On the plus side: there aren't that many players that revert to regular Vanilla after trying out CORE.

I downloaded CORE a while back but never really played it. It struck me that making destroyers individual ships, while cool, would mean that a destroyer flotilla now had 400 strength points rather than 100, while a battleship (more difficult to sink than 4 destroyers) still had 100.

I would be interested to know how this was addressed.

I can't give you the specifics to be honest, but I do know we're hardly suffering from lopsided naval victories, that's for sure. Surface engagements usually bad news for smaller vessels, while carrier engagements do see a more balanced kill sheet. Given the fact that carrier attacks had the tendency to target the big fishes first and foremost that seems pretty accurate IMHO. :)
