Easiest way is play as Italy, because they play a good supportive role to Germany and they start at war. You can make the Balkans and Mediterranean your playground. Watch Marco Antonio or alexlifeson1985 play as Italy

You need to register your game here on the Paradox site in order to see the Tech Support section, mod forum, and other areas. That will allow you to download the patches for the base game, which are pretty close to essential, since the unpatched game is barely even playable (as in "no WWII"). The expansions should be available from the same source you bought the game, otherwise there may be compatibility issues between Steam and other versions, and again the patches are close to essential to fix several serious issues. You need the "Semper Fi" expansion to use the "For the Motherland" expansion, and both are required for "Their Finest Hour", although you can probably get a "final" version which includes all of them for a reasonable price.

HI. I'm also new to HOI3, so I'll just ask my question on this thread if that's ok.

I started my first game as Republican Spain (I tried Ireland first, but that was mindnumbingly dull). I want to get to grips with the mechanics and organizing my army. I started the game on very easy...

After winning the spanish revolution and organizing my army just like I want it WW2 started. I joined the allies and sent my 3 inf corps to France. Then something weird happened. England nuked Germany repeatedly... I also noticed that all other countries had reactors and radar stations (in 1939). Somehow I think we are all playing on very easy and teching like crazy. Can somebody explain this and tell me how to avoid it?

Also I would like to mod the game to play for a longer period, and to make nukes much harder to research (So I can go for ww3 right after ww2 is over).

Let me guess: you used cheats... some cheats work for both the player and the ai, research cheats for example.
Both Ireland and Spain aren't good starting countries in my opinion.

Lets face it: Hearts of Iron 3 has a steep learning curve, steeper dan HOI1 and HOI2. Learning to play takes some time and effort. Personally coming from HOI2 i hated the amount of work that playing HOI3 seemed to take and having to relearn the game an ditched it a few times while continuing to play HOI2 Armageddon.
I used the Wiki mostly to learn the game, especially with the Strategy pages and the Country guides. Besides that reading some AARs and by now there are some good Lets play introduction AAR/video's. I still learn something sometimes from reading AARs.

Thank you, and you were right - i did use instantresearch for a while (mostly to experiment with the different unit-types). I guess I won't do that again.
I'll check out the AAR's!

You definitely want all the expansions. Once you learn how to play the game (and there is a learning curve), I suggest you might want to try some mods. Personally, I really like TRP, the Total Realism Project.
