New to HOI -or- absolute noob thread...

Well, I bought HOI-platinum yesterday (seems to be out in Belgium since last friday... )

And is there anything a total noob as me should know about playing HOI and are there any strategies I should follow and what are interesting starting countries?

And me being an experienced EU2player, what are the main differnces and what do I have to do differently?

Read the faqs in this forum.

I'd suggest Germany as starting nation, as you'll be setting the pace. Some people think of USA as a better alternative because they're "safe", but I think Germany best give a presentation of the basics. Start with 36 scenario if you'd like to figure out the tech system and such, or the 39 scenario if you want to go straight for the battles. Pay attention to tooltips, and when you fight battles, hoover the mouse over your divisions to see what factors are effecting your effieciency.

One thing that is very different from EU2 is fighting, you should not give a commander more divisions than he can handle (click his picture to see), you should attack from several directions if possible, etc etc.

My suggestion is to start as Germany in 39 with the easiest settings, you'll quite easily figure out the basics without necessarily getting your ass handed to you.

Download and read the FAQs and read the forum. There's been quite a few threads lately about newbies so just scan each forum page and look for them. Rather than us repeating the same thing on every page.

I'm had the game for more than a week now, so now I know everything....

-when you run out of rubber, you'll soon run out of oil. Then not only your industry stops, but also your vehicles, ships and planes. World market trade breaks down once you're in war (probably depends on some factors, I suddenly got only 3% of what I got in peacetime). So: stockpile like crazy or research industry techs *before* war begins, and keep an eye on your stockpiles from time to time.

HoI is completely different than EU2, just map seems to be similar.

I'd suggest you following strategy for getting into HoI from my own experience, as I was in similar position like you are now (I'm EU2 player too):
- play Germany in '36 scenario, as they are not that hard (on Normal/Normal), you can cover broad research with their IC and also build some units
- go with historical events, attack Poland on 1st September '39
- as Viss suggested, pay attention to tool-tips and hover everything you can
- from that game you'll collect many questions, return to forums and try to find answer to them in FAQs. I find these quite important:

Convoy FAQ
