I have watched a lot of youtube "Let's play" and tutorial videos. I understand that the game has had many patches and changes (eg Dutchies require 51% now) but the speed that some videos gain extraordinary amounts of money (to me extraordinary is 500+) has got me thinking had Ireland changed dramatically?

For players that have been around a while can you let me know the following pleasae?

All assuming a 1066 start
  1. Have all the names of counties and duchies changed?
  2. Are the building already built up?
    1. Any upgrades seem compared to my start point prohibitively expensive (eg castle walls II)
  3. Has Tech already been upgraded? The next tech I can get on Economy or Culture seems to have a cost of over 400
It just seems so slow to generate any savings. I mean more than one generation. If the game has changed, is there any advice on what I should do?

While watching those old tutorials used to be a good idea, they're quite obsolete. There are a bunch more mechanics, some things have been changed, and some things have been taken out.

I recommend look at the wiki for a few hours. http://www.ckiiwiki.com/Crusader_Kings_II_Wiki
It is up to date. I learned how to play the game off of the wiki.

Once you have a solid foundation built by the wiki, you can learn more refined mechanics here.

Have all the names of counties and duchies changed?
They added localisations, which in this case means that when the titles are held by Irish-cultured characters it displays an Irish (and to many, unpronounceable) name. There are also Norse localisations that will appear when held by a Norse character, and I'm sure others as well. This is the case with many counties/duchies/kingdoms/empires across the map.

Because later expansions add timelines farther back, you do start with more advanced buildings and tech in 1066. You should make a decent enough amount of money to upgrade them if you take over Ireland, though. Otherwise, you don't really need to upgrade. Save your money and plan your allies and conquests.

Which DLC/expansions are you playing with? Some of these might impact your starting conditions and options.

There is also a point of view that as an Irish count one of the first things you should do is borrow 300 gold from the jews and immediately expel them, This gives you a cushion of funds to use in conquering your neighbours with mercenaries.

Personally I'm not a fan of this route, although borrowing the money is a very useful option to have.

You need to be a king to expel the Jews, I'm pretty sure. But borrowing from them and never paying it back is also a pretty good option.

Like I say, it's a route I don't tend to go down so I don't know if there's a rank requirement for expelling them.

I generally try to keep them around though, because Jewish advisors can be useful.
