Looks like you have to keep a heavy hand on rebels, either that or nations were being released in peace deals because whoah, talk about disappearing and reappearing. England sucked it up for a large part of the game. If Spain can do that well with the AI at the helm, it must be easy mode. The Austrians really bit it, in both demo games I played they were very powerful, at least early.

Lots of inheritances as well. Pretty cool.

Guys, relax. It's more than 300 years of alternate reality "what ifs" in a series. The moment you start forking from real life events (say for example even something simple as the Ottomans getting Constantinople one year earlier, in 1452) there is a cascade effect. It is normal we end up with different borders and that's good.

I have to give a huge thumbs up to the AI and its semi-historical interest in colonizing certain regions with priority, as long as they were free. This timelapse was a great lesson of "what if" the British Empire did NOT steamroll as it should have. There was no ending in a glorious Victorian era so naturally Spain and France filled the gaps. This is perfectly normal, we should see dozens of timelines before we draw conclusions of unbalanced storyline.

Regarding how these timelines are done: I suspect there is a console command "to man the rebels", which makes the global view available. Then you let the AI do its wonders according to its own scripted priorities and mere chance! :)

There's a difference between 'different borders' and 'impossible borders'. A cascade effect can't explain things which are physically or logistically impossible. Don't be fooled into believing that Paradox games are actually plausible alternate history.

That doesn't make them bad though, just that at times the suspension of disbelief can be stretched too far.

If trade is supposed to lead exploration, expansion and colonization, then why would it take so long for spain to conquer central america, i wonder. Isn't there a trade node located? You would then expect them to colonize firstly around that node to maximize profits.

Muscovy's primary goal should be to form russia. They seem to go east instead of taking on LO.

Would have liked to see what happend in east asia. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Other than France in Africa, what was particularly stretching?

Loved how Inca managed to survive to the end as well as the reselience of North Africa. Wished there could have been more colonial revolts in South America. Also the BBB is alive and well though early Burgundian collapse helped it a lot.

Trust me, you have no idea what is possible or not. Just see a map of Germany before its 1871 unification. A gazillion of petty states, personal donains, duchies, etc. in the heart of Europe, long time after the feudal times had passed. Everything is possible!! After all, to call some borders impossible you have to give us evidence that the engine did something illegal or practically impracticable. Which was that and why?

That doesn't make them bad though, just that at times the suspension of disbelief can be stretched too far.
Actually, I would be in disbelief if I ever saw pixel-perfect borders of nations. All the rest is fair game AND realistic.

Actually, mathematically speaking (chaos theory), even the tiniest of variables cause momentous effects to occur. The early heart attack of some random peasant in France could mean a Portuguese world order by 1820, so plausible is extremely relative ;)

Besides, nobody in Europe in 1842 would have ever thought that a united Germany would form, let alone occupy Europe and invade a communist Russia 100 years from then.

I also don't like the fact that Muscovy couldn't form Russia, or that the Ottomans didn't seem like much of a threat (just like in EU3). However, it seems absolutely fantastic for a paradox game to act this way on release. Holy crap. If anyone's played Victoria I with no patches, you would realize just how much of an improvement this is. Compare this with EU3 on release, and then picture EUIV 1 year from now, it's going to be awesome :D

i wonder how spain managed to colonize nearly in the caribean sea first and in 1485... portugal started later in brazil (and this is normally the first place to reach)

ottomans were impressive in the beginning but they streched to far... fighting rebels in the far east make you vulnerable for mighty serbia in the west ;)
