The subject nations have for quite some time been quite a stale system. It is also a system that lacks variety, with most subjects being classified as a generic "vassal". I feel that there is plenty of room for introducing new types of subjects, and here is one that I would like to propose - puppet state.
Puppet state is a kind of subject meant to represent various states installing people on the thrones of other countries. It is also meant to result in dynamic subject changes.
Puppet states would be a bit like some of the tributaries in CK2 - tied ot the ruler.
A poppet state could be created by using an "Install puppet ruler" CB that could be gained via some events and some in-game shenanigans. For example, a country with low legitimacy could have its rival use the "Install puppet ruler" CB.
Installing a puppet ruler would have the effect of making the target a subject somewhat similar to a tributary, but with a few key differences.
1. Puppet states could conduct diplomacy like any tributary, but they could not enter into any deals with rivals of the overlord and it could never ally, royal marriage or transfer trade to any country that has negative relations with the overlord. It would also be unable to rival or declare war on allies of the overlord.
2. Upon creating a puppet state, it would get a new ruler, if a republic said ruler would automatically be a dictator, the puppet state would also get +200 relations and +100 trust with the overlord as long as the installed ruler is alive.
3. Upon ruler death, the puppet state would become an independent country, but the overlord would be able to use a diplomatic action "demand subjugation" for 5 years. If used the target would be asked to become puppet again. If refused, the former overlord would gain the "Install puppet ruler" CB for 5 years.
4. The puppet nation could be called to wars by overlord and would never refuse. The overlord would get calls to arms from a puppet attacked by an outsider, as if were from an ally, but they could freely refuse with no consequences beside lowered relations and trust.
5. Puppets would not take ordinary diplomatic relations limit. Instead, each country could have a max number of puppets equal to the current era (1,2,3,4). It's a way to encourage the use of the feature (does not take diplo slot) without making it OP (never a huge number).
6. Installing a puppet would give +10 power projection.
