Here's a list of some possible solutions to stuff that frustrates me with this game. The idea would be to add them to the 'tools' menu.

Hopefully this would lead to the possibility of playing the game with a more realistic cost for creating/destroying roads (prohibitively expensive), thus forcing the player to use these tools to come up with creative solutions.

  1. Split Road
Click anywhere on a road to split it into two sections at that point. Example use: when you have a long stretch of road without intersections and you want to delete a section of it. Normally you would have to mess around creating intersections with little bits of road. It's tedious, wastes money and impossible in confined spaces.
  2. Modify Median
    Left-turn Lanes in the Median
Use this to edit the median strip (the concrete section in the middle of an avenue). Clicking on the median strip near an intersection will create a short left-turn lane in the strip. Moving the mouse further away from the intersection increases the length of the left-turn lane. A second click confirms the length and actually builds the lane.
    Joining Roads Must Turn Right
If, after the first click, you move the mouse over the median strip on the opposite side of the intersection and click again, the two medians with join across the intersection. This means that joining roads will only be able to turn right and must give way, and traffic on the connected roads will never have to give way, minimising disruptions to traffic along the connected roads. Actually you should be able to use this on ALL roads, not just avenues. It's basically a way to specify right-of-way and would allow the creation of proper roadabouts, slip-ways and much more!
  3. Modify Lanes
Add the ability to re-paint existing roads to add bus lanes, add parking spaces and replace the median strip with lanes. This could work in the same way that adding tram-tracks and trolley-wires works (mouse-over highlights the lane, click confirms).
  4. Build Footpath
Add a new type of road just for pedestrians with the same width as the sidewalks that appear on normal roads. It doesn't create intersections when connected to a road. When changing height, if the slope is too steep, generate stairs instead.

Anyone else got some ideas?

5. A way to join one way roadways with two way roadways without an intersection. (ie split a normal road into two one ways)

6. It would also be nice to be able to pave the middle of the avenues with bus lanes.

7. Upgrade tools for roads that would force them to maintain the same spline path, or avoid destroying buildings.

8. A tool to forced one road to follow the spline of another roadway (useful for freeways).

3. Different way to add bus lanes
Adding bus lanes like tram track or trolley bus wire.

10.Lane select
Being able to select which lane turns where (Example: Lane one: Left - Lane two: straight - Lane three: Straight and right - Lane four: Bus lane, no arrows)

-

11.Traffic lights or not
Ability to select if you want traffic lights in an intersection or not. Can be used in map editor and normal play. Can be selected to any road/intersection. Pedestrian light optional.

12. In metro roads with four or more tracks, to make lane changes at any point.

Approximately the following:

This is what I meant in my second point, although I concede that I wasn't very clear. Joining roads without intersections (ie specifying right-of-way) is something that is crucial for many useful, real-world solutions. Joining one-way streets onto two-way streets is just one of a huge range of uses for this tool.

6. It would also be nice to be able to pave the middle of the avenues with bus lanes.
What I'm suggesting with point three is a greater flexibility with lanes which would include the ability to put bus lanes in the middle.

7. Upgrade tools for roads that would force them to maintain the same spline path, or avoid destroying buildings.
Yep, this would be very useful. I think this could work as an extension to my third suggestion, where moving the mouse over an existing lane highlights it and clicking builds the improvement. If you move the mouse over the space where an extra lane would be this is highlighted and clicking builds it. Exactly like tramlines/trolley-wires work right now. However it needs to be clearer which buildings will be destroyed in the process. I think if a building is going to be destroyed by an action it should be highlighted red. I'm sure someone must have already suggested that though.

8. A tool to forced one road to follow the spline of another roadway (useful for freeways).
I completely agree. One example of a tool like this is in Sid Meier's Railroads! (not to be confused with Railroad Tycoon). It could be called something like "Create Parallel Path".

9. Different way to add bus lanes
Adding bus lanes like tram track or trolley bus wire.

This is what I've suggest in my second point.

10.Lane select
Being able to select which lane turns where (Example: Lane one: Left - Lane two: straight - Lane three: Straight and right - Lane four: Bus lane, no arrows).

This could be very useful for fixing troublesome intersections. I can see people obsessively setting every lane of every intersection in their city! :p

Ability to select if you want traffic lights in an intersection or not. Can be used in map editor and normal play. Can be selected to any road/intersection. Pedestrian light optional.

Do you mean it to affect how the traffic flows or just aesthetics? You can already delete traffic and pedestrian lights but it's quite tedious and is only aesthetical. I agree that there needs to be greater choice about how intersections work.

I would like to ask a mod to merge a lot of these threads to the requests and suggestions thread.

I agree that requests and suggestions need to be listed in the sticky thread but at present I think it would be better to leave this thread alone and continue the discussion until we can reach some consensus about which tools would be useful and coherent. With this kind of change it doesn't make sense to look at each tool separately, they need to be considered as a group and the sticky is not a great place to have lengthy discussions about such things.

Hi. Yes, we usually merge this kind of threads but as LittleJohn47 said, if I merge now the discussion will be broken as other messages will be in the middle of it.

I ask you guys that next time keep suggestions in the proper thread as it helps the devs to follow it. I understand the players tend to create new threads so their topics get more attention, but that doesn't help the dev team.

I think a suggestion-sub-forum would be better than just a topic. Suggestion in that topic is too easily hidden and forgotten...

Actually this is not my point at all. I would like to discuss how road-building and modification can be improved in a way that provides a coherent solution. This cannot be done in the sticky as the sheer size of it and the number of individual dialogues it contains makes it impossible to have a decent discussion about a single issue. This is what happens when you make a thread which is overly vague and everyone is encouraged to pitch-in. The best long-term solution to this would be to create a sub-forum for suggestions as Smaen said.

This. I agree with myself :eek:o
