"To be more clear on the matter: nomads will always be able to join the Tengri Warrior Lodge, regardless of their religion. The other lodges require you to follow the appropriate faith, or: to have Tribal government, while not being Zealous, and also while neighboring a ruler that follows a pagan religion."

View attachment 399632

As you can see in the quote, you need to be of the Germanic faith or tribal to become a member of the Germanic warrior lodge. Thus, as he is a temple holder (NOT tribal), he needs to be of the Germanic faith.

And the "fighting one of our own", confirms that the temple holder with unidentified portrait is a member of the
Germanic warrior lodge.

Thus except in the very improbable case that a Western Slavic within four months (April 769) after the game was started, converted to the Germanic faith and became a temple holder, he has to be a Saxon.

Thus Saxons have new portraits.

It might actually be real, his haircut is the same as one you can sport with Anglo-Norman ethnicity.

If you look closely at the new African maps on the DD you may see there are some new saracen units in the Berber regions. The portraits are still Vanilla arab though.

The whole default units should be remade in my opinion: East and West European, and Arabic. This could be done just like Early unit models were introduced along Charlemagne DLC. They look terribly outdated.

Would Saxons use English portraits? At this moment English portraits are only in the game starting in 1066, not in 769.

He's a pagan temple holder, and a glance at the background shows that the screenshot is from 769. This must be the case. It's probably a change being added with HF. Fingers crossed that Anglo-Saxons use these instead of vanilla portraits, too; it seems unfair to have a whole portrait pack that only affects two cultures.

Very good find! I think in terms of genetics and phenotypes, the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes would have likely looked very similar, if not indistinguishable to the Normans and later English, as represented by this game. Facially, probably very similar, as both groups would have been North Germanics that likely assimilated native Celtic (Briton and Gallic Celts) people, including some of their features into their own ethnicities after the first generations of settlement; the Angles and co. since the 5th century, and the Normans since the 9th century. I am fine with the Anglo-Saxons, even Saxons given the Norman/English faces, with perhaps the Dutch and Frisians suiting the look, also.

Here is a question, fellows. If the Anglo-Saxons have been given new portraits, who of the default portraits are left? It's possible that it is just the Dutch, Frisians, and Hungarians, at this point. Would anyone else be OK with the Hungarians given the Croatian "Central Slavic" faces, or should they get their own looks? Hungarians are heavily of Slavic ancestry, as well as Magyar, Germanic, and some Avar and Scythian-Sarmatian ancestry. The mod CPR+ basically uses the Finno-Ugric faces, but makes them more tan and slightly wider-eyed, while giving them default European portrait hairstyles, which seems to suit the Hungarians (And Avars) well.

The Dutch already use German portraits in-game.

Is more: We want "unit packs" to accompany all "portraits packs". Point is... till now for HF only the new saracen were spotted...

I was thinking of something like they did in EU4, where the vanilla generic Western European unit models were remade in a free update two years ago, 3 years after the game was released. The old and dated Western European unit models were completely replaced since then.

If something like this could be done in EU4, and we even get a complete set of unit models for Western and Eastern Europe and the Muslim world along with Charlemagne DLC (even if they were similar unit models with different variations in weapons, helmets and shields, like the current default vanilla units), i'm sure the same could be done for Mid and/or Late game units.

The mod CPR+ basically uses the Finno-Ugric faces, but makes them more tan and slightly wider-eyed, while giving them default European portrait hairstyles, which seems to suit the Hungarians (And Avars) well.

It would be interesting to finally have Anglosaxons using one of the "new" portrait packs, instead of the default one. I was expecting something like that since Monks & Mystics was released (along with Norman/English and German portrait packs), and I even made two mods for that: using Norman/English and German portraits (personally, I liked the German version better).

Regarding Hungarians, having them using this new Croatian "Central Slavic" portrait pack would make sense. It seems that splitting Southern Slavs in two different portrait packs would make sense in order to better reflect the different religious (and cultural) influences, as Serbians and Bulgarians would be more influenced by the Byzantines and Orthodoxy, while the Croat influence would be Catholic. If so, it would make sense for the Hungarians to use the "Croatian" portraits instead of the other new Western or Southern Slavic packs. In any case, in my opinion, the perfect option would be having them use their own "magyargfx" graphical culture, even if initially this new culture don't have their own portrait pack and shares it with another culture (just as English and Normans have two different graphical cultures: englishgfx and normangfx, and they both use the same portrait pack). This would allow achievement-friendly mods to be made, giving them their own unique look by combining different portrait packs, for example (personally, I would love making some kind of mod, something like Finno-Ugric faces with Turkic or Cuman clothes for Early Magyars, and Finno-Ugric faces with Western European or Croat clothes and hairstyles for Mid and Late game Hungarians).

Also, back to the units topic, something should be done in my opinion related to the Balts (Lithuanian, Prussian...) unit pack. I don't think Finno-Ugric units fit them well enough.

I think Anglo Saxons/Saxons should have their own portraits, and maybe add in the Frisians as well? The Dutch using German portraits is good from what I see. The Basque can easily use Iberian if needed, and Hungarians should use Croatian portraits.

I agree with that.

Having the Saxons use the English face pack makes the Normans looking like Saxons and Anglo-Saxons rather than the French or the Norse kind of illogical.

Priority is for White Christians (French) to get proper portraits but I would agree with Saxons getting portraits similar to the Normans. All they would need to do would be to keep the facial structure but give them their still heathen facial hair and braids and whatnot.

I think the Anglo-Saxons and Saxons should just use the German portraits, the Frisians could either use the German or the Dutch ones.

I think the Anglo-Saxons and Saxons should just use the German portraits, the Frisians could either use the German or the Dutch ones.

I guess if PDox doesn't wanna make anymore portraits, then yeah it would be the next best thing for the Saxons. I'm really hoping there's one more portrait pack, those Western Germanics (except Dutch) could do with their own unique clothes and looks. At the very least, give the standard portraits some new clothes. If I don't have to look at the blurry mess of the "jellybean crown" (AKA standard emperor's crown) then I'll be happy.

Of course a new portrait set would be best, but in case they don't get one, then the German one would imho suffice.

I agree, anything to avoid the "jellybean crown" and, I might add, the faces that look like Crystal Meth addicts...

Maybe one of the Crackedtoothgrin(SP?) could design a "Crowns&Coronets" content patch. Or maybe a Modder could Mod it. Either way, I'd buy it!

If the Saxons are sharing portraits with the Normans, I'm "afraid" we won't ever see the default Western European portraits with the Jellybean crown anymore, except maybe in the Hungarians' case, but, as I said in my late post, I don't think that only they're the ones to be left with the default portraits, and I hope they share portraits with the Croats, for example...

That's something I've been thinking about for years... Maybe simple Clothing Packs (plus maybe Hairstyles and Beards) would've been enough to represent cultural differences in some cases, instead of completely different faces.

The vanilla European faces aren't that bad, so an "Anglo Saxon" or "West Germanic" clothing pack for them can be enough actually. The vanilla clothes and crowns seem kinda dated compared to the newer portraits.
