I just bought V:R from Gamersgate.
I've played EU2 and EU3, enjoying them both, though without completely mastering any of them.
I liked the historical approach of EU2 over the more 'dynamic' of EU3.
I hear VIP is more historical than vanilla V:R, so I was thinking of starting out directly with VIP, but is this a good idea?
Will I be better off, as a new player, learning the vanilla game before tackling VIP?

As a totally brand new player to Victoria yea, you're probably better off getting a few games under your belt with Vanilla before going to VIP. Regardless, the best VIP install method is to make a second copy of the game so you still have an original version...

VIP highly recommends this, make a duplicate desktop copy of your Victoria folder first, then download and apply VIP to the desktop copy. Because VIP has to mod universal files that affect any scenario of Victoria you play, it ends up making the original non-VIP scenarios unplayable. Having the mod download into a desktop copy, as we recommend, solves this problem, and makes it easy to delete VIP if you don't like it - just junk the desktop copy folder of Victoria with VIP installed in it. No need to reinstall the whole game.

We do recommend that new players get comfortable with the basic mechanincs of Victoria first before trying VIP, since the massive number of additional events can make trying to come to terms with the basics of the game seem even more daunting.
