Long time Paradox player, first time Crusader Kings player. I jumped in once I saw the Song of Ice and Fire Mod and that is what I am playing now. I will definitely jump into the base game as well, but am having a blast.

Couple of questions...

1. Is there any way to NOT have your Count/Duke/King lead an army if your muster the garrison from your home province? Obviously sometimes your leader has a bad martial score or you just don't want to have the chance of him falling in battle.

2. What is the mechanics behind getting someone to agree to vassalize to you? Strong leader? Strong army? One playthrough I couldn't get anyone to vassalize with me and now I have provinces asking for the right to vassalize and I am not sure what I'm doing differently.

Thanks!

I think people will start to ask for vassalization if you are their natural overlord (f.e. the Duke of a French Duchy will ask the King of France for vassalage).

Also I think that the AI looks at your reputation and diplomacy value to agree to vassalise to you.

1. If you have more then 1 county in your demense, you can first raise those regiments. One of the first will be lead by your ruler, once he lead that regiment, raise the one in your capital and then disband the one that is lead by your ruler.

2. This sound like you haven't installed the latest beta-patch, see the last post in the sticky thread.

Thanks for the replies. I have installed the latest beta patch though. It says 2.1 in game...

Just went and read the beta patch thread again and don't think I am being clear on my vassalization questions.

If I am a "Duke" and there is a "Count" nearby, what factors need to be present for them to accept being my vassal? I have never succeeded in offering a vassalation (during peace) and it being accepted, but I have had counts ask to become my vassal during peace.

If you are Duke of Ulster then the Count of Tir Connail is likely to want to be your vassal but it is less likely that the Count of Sligo will want to be since Tir Connail is a 'natural' part of the Duchy of Ulster whereas Sligo is not. You can find the natural affiliations for Duchies and Kingdoms by mousing over the province and waiting a couple of seconds for the tool tip to show (it also shows current ownership and control if the latter differs).

In my experience having good relations with the potential vassal is also important - once it hits 100 vassalisation seems much more likely to occur. There are probably other factors.

It will say 2.1 beta for all beta-patches, so 2.1 doesn't mean automatically mean you have the latest beta. The version of DV that is sold, doesn't come with the latest beta, but that of june 2008.

A count will only offer to become your vassal if you hold his default 'higher' title and if your reputation is honourable and be at peace.

If counts/dukes from places outside of the title you hold, then you most likely don't have the latest beta installed, since there was a bug in DV that only got fixed with the later beta-patches.

Also remember that if you ask someone to become your vassal and he accepts you will get badboypoints. If someone offers to become your vassal, you don't get the badboypoints.

Gotcha...well I downloaded the patch at the bottom of the patch thread and installed it, but I'll do it again in case I messed something up.

Where can I find the tooltip where it shows my bad boy points?

Thanks again for the help!

You can't see your Badboy-points directly, but based on your reputation you can deduce it

0 BB = We have an honourable reputation
1-2 BB = We have a respectable reputation
3-5 BB = We have a slightly tarnished reputation
6-10 BB = We have a tarnished reputation
11-15 BB = We have a rather bad reputation
16-20 BB = We have a very bad reputation
21-25 BB = We have an extremly bad reputation
26-30 BB = We are dishonourable scum
30+ BB = We are worse than Dishonourable scum

What do I gain from marrying off a daughter? I lose the ability to utilize her if she has a good ST or DI ratings, etc....but not sure what I gain?

Thanks!

You gain prestige and from the marriage of your eldest daughter, you also can get extra gold.

Also if you are able to marry a daughter to a vassal, that vassal will get a monthly loyalty bonus.

Hi,

I hope you don't mind if I also post a few new player questions in this thread... didn't want to open a new one, when this one is relatively recent :) I have played EU3, thats the extent of my Paradox games.

1) I am a bit confused about the alliances. It seems to me, when I have an ally, that they call me for every war they have, while they never come to my help in my wars. Is there a possibility to ask them to join (I did not find such a diplomatic option)? Or are they asked automatically, and they just don't answer the call to arms?

2) Army composition. I read somewhere, that knights are quite good. So I increased the power of nobles in my provinces using the "+" button in the province screen. However, in about half my provinces, there were zero knights in the army, while there was a reasonable amount of them in other provinces. I have the traditional customs policy, which explicily states "few knights", but that does not explain why there are knights in some provinces and in other not?

3) What is the best course of action if a vassal breaks away and I want him (well, his province(s)) back? I've tried declaring war, crushing him, and vassalising him again in the peace deal... but a few years later he rebels again (well, probably understandable...). Annexing him is also a possibility, but then I think I get badboy, which could lead to problems with other vassals...

4) Is there some way I haven't thought of that lets you "rearrange" your realm? I'd love my realm to have the appropriate dukes (ideally family members) having the appropriate counts as vassals. I don't think that revoking and granting titles on a large scale is a good idea for realm stability...

Thanks!

4) Is there some way I haven't thought of that lets you "rearrange" your realm? I'd love my realm to have the appropriate dukes having the appropriate counts under them, and the correct dukes under the correct king title (not yet an issue, as I have only one king title). I don't think that revoking and granting titles on a large scale is a good idea for realm stability...

Hello and welcome to CK then :) ... as you have probably discovered, it is a bit different from the EU series.

1. They are asked automatically, so in your case they have simply refused. There are no consequences for refusing your ally, so feel free to refuse whenever you don't feel like helping out.

2. If I remember right, you do not get knights in mountainous or swampy provinces. They are replaces with something else (which I can't remember). Also as to army composition, the battle system in CK is rather simplistic, and usually the one with more numbers will win.

3. It depends. If your reputation is bad (high BB) then rebelling vassals can be a god send for you. What you do is to crush him, and relinquish the claim you got when he declared independence (-1 BB), and force-vassalize him (0 BB). Then he is back in your realm, and you have just reduced your reputation. If he later rebels again, you gain a new claim for free.

If your reputation is not too bad, and he keeps rebelling, then take his title in the peace talks, and find a more loyal vassal. I usually do this even with pretty bad reputation if he has the 'Rebellious' trait. This can cause too many problems for you if he continues as your vassal, that I'd rather take the BB hit.

4. No. Either be mindful of how you hand out titles in the first place, or you will have to revoke titles and regrant them to "transfer" vassals from one duke to another.

It will cost you loyalty and BB, but do it over a period where there is peace and you should be ok. Just keep the Reputation below "Tarnished" and you should not have major issues with the vassals. I once did a complete rearrange of vassals in the Iberian peninsulr where I held all the king titles, because I wanted to split it up amongst my sons. Took me quite a few a years and a few wars to get it done properly.

1) Oh ok... I usually only refused if I was fighting someone else already... good to know!

2) Ok, that would explain it.

3) Sounds good. I try to keep my badboy low, by waiting between wars and not annexing too much in one go.

4) That's what I thought :)

Another question, I want to usurp the Duchy of Lower Lorraine from the Kingdom of Burgundy, but I cannot find Burgundy on the map... It's not in the area where Burgundy usually is. I suppose they were annexed by someone and had to relocate ... Is there some way to find a Kingdom?

EDIT: Never mind, I found out that you can change countries upon loadup, just like in EU3 ;)

Use the search function. Usually it is activated with the ? key on your keyboard, though it might vary on different types of keyboards and languages.

When searching for titles, you have to include the complete title. So search for 'Kingdom of Burgundy', not just 'Burgundy'. This will only work if that title is the primary title the ruler holds. You can also check the counties that make up the duchy. If they are still vassals, then on their character screen, you can see their liege, and that way work your way up the food chain to the one you want.

Oh, I did not know you could also search for 'Kingdom of X'. Thought it was only for provinces ;) The proud King of Burgundy and Italy (as well as Duke of... too many) had his court in Ancona, with one vassal, the count of Urbino. But the list of claims was impressive!

Another question/remark: I find the behaviour of vassals a bit random. Several times vassals rebelled (or even outright declared war on me), who had 100 relations and a positive modifier each month... and I cannot think of anything I might have done to annoy them. Except I might have other laws in place than they have... But I enacted them decades ago.
It's a bit annoying at the moment, my vassals take turns trying to break away... there is no chance of them succeeding, but oh well... if their goal is to annoy me, then they achieved it. And, somehow (I dont remeber how or when) the duke of Gelre is my ally and not only the vassal he is supposed to be. and somehow he also got quite some provinces which I had sieged. Maybe he was there at the siege too, I don't know. That is annoying too, since they then make peace with the count we took the province from (rebellous vassals, remember?) and now they have like 5 provinces nicely spread out in central france, southern germany and the lowlands. I revoked some titles, but still... a bit strange.

Another question: Inheritance laws.
Being opportunistic, I looked for counties/duchies with semisalic law, hoping to inherit by marrying the ruler's daughter. I found a duchy with semisalic primogeniture, where the ruler had only a daughter (also a son, but he's dead without children). The ruler also has a sister with children, and also some more distant relatives (great uncle with children, etc.) I succeeded in marrying the daughter to a member of my dynasty (not my heir, unfortunately. But still, I like putting my dynasty on as many thrones as possible).
The happy couple then had two sons. Should those two sons not be first on the succession list? As is is, they don't even appear on the list, only the ruler's nephews and some other even more distant relations. His grandchildren are sadly missing :(

I'm playing DVIP, if that's important.

Thanks for the many enlightening answers :)

Most likely he has the 'Rebellious' trait. Any vassal with that trait will eventually get events that lets them cause a civil war, "infect" other vassals with the trait, and declare independence.

Oh, I can't remember how it works, depending on which of the semi-salic laws there is. But since the ruler does not have male children, but his sister does, the maybe the line is traced through her, as she is the oldest living female. Sadly I have never been good at figuring out the semi-salic laws.

Oh I think I figured it out - the daughter is a bastard. In my joy of finding the "right" ruler, I did not check the daughter's traits... oh well, my fault then :)

Another one: how can i convert provinces? I have a muslim province, and would like to convert them... I have a diocese bishop in my court. And as we are on the topic, is it possible to convert the culture of provinces as well? If yes, how?
And is there a way to get epidemics removed? The 50% gold modifier and 900% build time one are quite annoying :)

Thanks!

1. Religious conversion: Yes, you can. It happens by event. The better the bishop the higher the chance of a mass conversion. If he is 'Zealous', I believe that helps too. You can also help the conversion along by giving more power to the Clergy in that province. To have a positive modifier to the MTTH of the event, they need to have above 33% power. I think the effect levels out at around 50%. Building religious buildings also helps (though these reduce the likelihood of cultural conversions).

1b. Violent conversion: This is when one of the classes rebels against you because of your different religion. This is also an event. I think the conversion chances are 25% for peasants, 33% for burghers, 50% for clergy and 75% for nobles. So to get the best chance of conversion, you will want to enfuriate the noble class. This is done by taking away their power. Set it to 5% or less, and eventually they will rebel. One of the options is to do a conversion by the sword.

2. Yes it is. But it is much more tricky that doing a religious conversion. You have to be at peace, and the culture have to be able to spread to the province. You can read more about the event here: http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum...ral-conversion-event-in-CK-1.05-and-Deus-Vult

3. They will eventually go away on their own. Patience.
