I just got a pop up saying new nvidia drivers. I did a custom install and checked the uninstall old drivers at bottom so it was a clean slate.

I didn't check thoroughly, but my FPS jumped up 10-15fps when zoomed in.

Forget it - just yesterday I upgraded my PC from a Geforce GTX670 to a GTX980. So I also installed the newest driver.
This means, a new more powerful video card and the latest driver, you should expect a performance boost in the FPS rate.
The reality is, however, not a single FPS more then before my upgrade, in fact exactly the same FPS rates as before.
What I can use now without performance hits are the various post processing mods like dynamic resolution and stuff like that, these doesn't affect the FPS at all.
But in a city with 290.000 population, if you zoom in there are more then enough areas where you only get 20 FPS or a less, so don't expect any wonders.
Btw, my system is an I5-2500k oc to 4,1 GHz and 16 GB RAM, 1TB SSD Samsung 850 Evo.

So basically, before your upgrade you could not use much of the post-processing in C:SL, and now you can without affecting the FPS at all.

How is this not a wonderful upgrade? This is like as good as it gets!
(btw nice card man haha, im using the GTX780 and boy im jelly..)

correct - without affecting the already low FPS if zoomed in ;)

And the game takes what it can get - before I had my CPU I5-2500K running wwith default speed (3,3 - 3,7 Ghz) and 8 GB RAM and the GTX 670. CPU load was always around 95-100%, it used 6 GB RAM (rest of 2 GB for was used by the system) and the GTX 670 with 2 GB VRAM had an GPU Load of 98% and all VRAM was used.

Now with the news specs of my upgraded system the game has again a CPU load of around 100% but with 4,1 GHz oc, it uses 13 GB RAM (of 16 GB installed), and the GPU load with the GTX 980 is again 98% and it uses almost all of the 4 GB VRAM.

Btw, I didn't buy the GTX980 only for C:SL but to run games like BF4, GTA V, Project Cars with Full Ultra details in 2560x1440 :)

If your memory is at 1200% total, then you may need more ram. It sounds like you have a mod or two slowing you down.

but at 290k pop you're going to have low FPS (or any pop) as your issues are with CPU in this game.

When you zoom in you will always notice a greater load as not only the CPU under full load, now you're increasing the GPU load dramatically. So now both CPU and GPU are compounding the load. Windows doesn't like this. It is not very optimized to use both at once, not to mention horrible at multithreading in general. DX12 is suppose to focus on these issues, but have to be programmed into apps for them to work properly.

Sweet, nice setup. if you can still switch game speeds and notice the difference, especially x1 to x2 then you have plenty of power. Just because the CPU is at a 100% doesn't mean it has no power left. My CPU has been pegged for a long time and after 150k pop increase it still has the same FPS and cpu usage and load.

Download the latest Windows 10 and see if your 980 can squeeze some more FPS since DX12 is supported in Win10. Make sure to use the 64-bit version. This game is suppose to use Unity 5 which supports dx12 but not sure if they use any of the features yet.

I'm glad, because it won't help this game much as you can already see. If you want higher FPS in this game to need to optimize your city. When my traffic is bad I can get near 20fps, but when my traffic is free flowing I get over 40fps. I mean zoomed in mode too. Zoomed out I get a full 60fps at all times. My city is 400-425k.

How is your city? Is it still growing or are you stagnant? When I was around 300k I started getting lag from freight. I had to eliminate exports by lowering my freight production to get trucks off the roads. Had to add lots more freeways and straighten roads to quicken their transport times or they seem to become late for work or don't make it on time.

Now at 425 I'm focusing on shrinking my districts. Too large of RCI pockets. Need to mix specialized industry with generic industry so traffic travels next door, not across the map. Adding more cargo trains and ships so they can reach their destinations quicker.

Good luck, and let us know how well win10 and DX12 works out. It may convince to upgrade if it helps if even a little.

Installed the new drivers but for some reason, not sure if it is the drivers or the patch, adaptive sync no longer works. Running at 1440p with my GTX 980 and unless adaptive sync works the card soon runs hot and the fan noise becomes intrusive, with the frame rate going crazily high. Adaptive sync should apply but doesn't and so I'm using the v-sync in game to limit the frame rate to that of the refresh rate of the monitor and thus the load on the GPU and thereby reducing the fan noise.

With new patch 1.10b game FPS rate took again a hit. When I use the mods like dynamic resolution, post processing, SSAO, I hardly get more than 19-20 FPS, full zoomed out 25-26 FPS :(
Tested with above mentioned map.

However, without the graphic mods it isn't better !

I used this map/saved game for testing (it's not mine):
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=441846953

It doesn't use any custom assets so it's perfect for testing. Maybe you also could download it and let us know the results. btw, what are your system specs ?
Win10 has still to wait, I generally don't like Beta testing.

I ran this under win8.1 on my i7-4790k(auto-OC 4.4GHz by MB), 16gb ram, GTX 780 3GB, and Maximus Hero 7 MB Acer XB280HK G-Sync 4k (3840 x 2160)
Runs smooth. I follow a bus zoomed in all the way and fps is 30-55 depending on how busy traffic is. My cpu is 65-80% 70% average. My GPU memory is around 50-70% and load is about same

Installed the new drivers but for some reason, not sure if it is the drivers or the patch, adaptive sync no longer works. What monitor do you run that has adaptive sync? On my G-Sync monitor I have to enable G-Sync so look for a setting to turn it on. Should be with SLI iirc.

weird, my 1.1.0b made my FPS better and traffic got worse. It may not be the graphics driver that made it better, maybe it was the patch? I didn't notice until posting this thread. Oh wait, it was still running on 1.0.7C when I posted, as 1.1.0.b has changed the UI in the game. I still had the old UI when testing.

How do you enable dynamic mode? I never used that before. never had a reason I guess. I know it causes super high resolution and would surely lower your fps dramatically.

Cant help but notice the recommended settings for Cities skylines is still way under what my system can and has done. Why don't CO address this with Nvidia?

There is nothing to address. You can't compare this game to others. This game is all CPU lag, it has nothing to do with GPU. This game still uses DX9 graphics so it can use the extra processing power for the game.

I have the same driver, which I had actually as a beta about 3 weeks ago as part of Windows 10 Tech Preview. I noticed big difference in performance between the previous driver and the current one, not counting the overall great performance with Windows 10.

What monitor do you run that has adaptive sync? On my G-Sync monitor I have to enable G-Sync so look for a setting to turn it on. Should be with SLI iirc.

.

In the game Dying Light, for example, I set it to use Adaptive sync in the control panel of the NVidia drivers (Global 3D settings). I turn it off in the game menu. Then with my monitor (BenQ 27" 1440p) it will run at the monitors maximum refresh rate and thus provide 60FPS. When in the most intensive scenes it will drop as needed by 1 FPS at a time. Without adaptive sync if 60FPS could not be maintained then it would drop to half that, as that is how vertical sync works as I understand it. It still works with Dying Light with these new drivers.

In this game adaptive sync does not work for me as it does not cap the game at 60FPS and thus allows it to maximise the GPU, running at 99% load and so giving something silly like 600 plus FPS, which couldn't even be displayed. This overheats the GPU and thus the fans speed up. Even adding the game to the list of them within the control panel of the drivers makes no difference.

The normal sync settings within the game do work and allow a maximum of 60FPS, maybe on very large cities that might not matter if it drops but if it does and it adheres to how I understand V-Sync to work then it will drop by half. With this the GPU loading drops to about 30% in the map that I have just started post patch.

I wonder anyone after installing this new driver got crash once exit to main menu?

If I exit the game directly then most times it is fine. If I exit the game from first going to the main menu then it will exit with a crash showing that cities.exe has stopped working, sometimes.

This used to be a bigger issue prior the last patch. But I have had it a few times now since this latest patch, I doubt that it is NVidia drivers related as it happened prior the drivers update.
