Modern Day Naval Tech Tree: UPDATED

Here is a naval tech tree i designed to work with late cold war/modern mods for DH. It is a complete rework of the naval tech tree removing a lot of the obsolete unit types that don't exist in the modern day.

I plan for it to work in conjunction with a naval combat system im developing that will place the emphasis on increasing the number attached brigades and improving them rather than ship models. I hope for this to reflect upgrading of existing ships being the priority rather than the production of new ones. Hopefully in the new system a tier 1 destroyer will be equal to a tier 4 destroyer if the brigades are properly upgraded.

The reason im putting the picture up now is so that i can get some feedback on the layout, models and types available. Im definitely no master modder but i have basic skills and the time and the patience to learn

Take a look at the pictures and let me know what you think

Any feedback on the tech page would be appreciated, improvements or revisions etc. p.s. this is a very rough version so typos are everywhere

# Updated

I have added a picture of the new brigade system (WIP) it will take some balancing but its mostly there now featuring a funky little helicopter brigade offering bonuses to anti sub and anti ship as well as detection at a significant cost! Picture drawn by my own fair hand available to all ship types except subs

Also CAG's available to light/medium and supercarriers never did understand why light carriers couldn't have cags.
Thanks - Neil

i'm presuming this is designed for a modern day scenario. If so you may wish to join up with one of the teams working on MDS. Or maybe with a little bit of tweaking you could join up with Bizon and improve NWO/DH's naval tree.?

I have been working on it for a while and will obviously make it available to anyone who wants to integrate it into their mds or cold war mods but i have been waiting for one to be released before putting it forward. I wouldn't like to just "jump on the band wagon" of someones mod i'd rather introduce it once their mod is completed.

I guess that with 1.3 you'll add corvettes?

I don't know the details of 1.3, could you link me to where it is please?

I mean 1.3's new feature where you can create new units from scratch.

The way its working now is:

You get specialist destroyers/frigates and standard, a basic example:

Basic Frigate might have 0 stats, the Basic AsW Frigate will have +4 sub detection and sub attack but 0 stats elsewhere

then you will be able to equip 4 modules either
2 AA modules, 1 Anti ship module and 1 helicopter <--- AA Frigate equipment
2 AsW modules, 1 Anti ship module and 1 helicopter <--- AsW Frigate equipment
1 Anti Ship module, 1 AA module, 1 AsW module and 1 helicopter <--- General Purpose Frigate

So essentially specialized ships, AsW Frigates and AA Destroyers gain buffs (initial stat buffs) which complement setting up the ship as a AsW Frigate or AA Destroyers. They will perform their given specialization better than any other ship but will be less flexible and slightly more expensive.

Basic frigates set up with the general purpose frigate modules will be able to defend itself in a variety of situations but will be less capable than their specialized counterparts. they may also be slightly less expensive (haven't tested this) meaning nations with weaker IC will most likely go for these ships for their flexibility.

Have a look at the attached pictures but be aware the unit stats haven't been implemented in this picture, it shows two Type 42 AA destroyers, two type 23 AsW frigates, 1 type 22 general purpose frigate and a invincible class aircraft carrier, all with appropriate brigades.

Brigades are color coded:

Yellow - Anti ship buffs
Red - AA ship buffs
Green - AsW ship buffs
Blue - Aircraft

what's the difference between AA and non-AA ships? what's the difference between destroyers and frigates?
what will be the best combo of ships?

Essentially, if you are a major power who is likely to operate aircraft carrier battle groups then it would make sense to build some dedicated AA destroyers that will never leave the carriers side, as such they wont need anti-ship or anti-submarine modules as other ships will provide this capability.

If you are minor power who is likely to only operate frigates and destroyers then dedicated ships will be more of a liability as their capability gaps will see them destroyed easily by their rock/paper/scissors counterpart.

The difference between Frigates and Destroyers is that AsW specializations are restricted to Frigates and AA specializations restricted to Destroyers. Though the system is flexible enough to have AA Frigates and AsW Destroyers but they will be less capable than their opposite counterpart.

Destroyers may also be slightly more expensive and have slightly superior anti-ship abilities to represent Destroyers being traditionally superior combat ships. Though this isn't implemented in the game yet so hasn't been tested.

Like what you're doing! It drives me crazy to have to keep building new ships instead of refitting my old ones. Keep up the good work!

what would you think is the best combo of ships to annihilate any fleet?

Currently DLGs/CGs are annihilating anything, AA is too powerful and CAG's are too weak in the build im testing now but its hard to say whether or not this is actually accurate or not since modern AA missiles haven't come into contact with modern CAGs yet.. For all we know modern naval combat between equal combatants may be conducted entirely by long range unmanned missiles rather than fighters from carriers, it may even revert back to using radar assisted cannons which cant be intercepted by AA missiles.

I have tried to balance it based on the few examples from history, such as HMS Gloucesters sea dart missiles intercepting an Iraqi silkworm missile during the 91' conflict in the gulf, but its difficult to balance AA against missiles and CAGs.

Currently i have locked CG's to the USA to try balancing but they seem to be overpowered, i have been messing around with range and positioning to try and make it seem like the battles are taking place over greater areas which could have something to do with it.

Any idea of adding in missile boat? Many third world countries(eg.Egypt) choose to use missile boats instead of warships to mantain naval supremacy.

With 1.3 it is (apparently) possible to create new units, if that is so then i will create a new ship class of corvette or light frigate. Included in this would be the many warships operated by smaller nations for brown water operations such as the Vosper Mk 5 type and the Descubierta-class corvettes

what's the maximum number of attachments?

as it stands now 4 is the maximum for most ships, aircraft carriers are limited to CAGS, Helicopters and AA missiles amphibious assault ships are limited to helicopters and AA missiles. If i am able to create a corvette/light frigate class of ships they will be limited to 2 attachments
