Libya
Libya is a country in North Africa. It was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in the mid-16th century, a part of the Mamluk Sultanate before. The Ottomans brought together the three traditional regions of Tripolitania, Cyrenaica, and Fezzan. Their rule was broken up by the Karamanli dynasty, which ruled over Tripolitania, and extended influence over the rest of modern Libya. The Ottomans returned in 1835, but Libya would be reunified during the Italo-Turkish War of 1911. Italian rule, however, was not felt until the 1920s, when Italian generals Pietro Badoglio and Rudolfo Graziani waged punitive pacification campaigns, and resistance quickly died out after rebel leader Omar Mukhtar was executed by Italian Fascist forces. Following the Italian surrender of 1943, Britain and France occupied Libya, which was placed under joint United Nations trusteeship. A UN resolution declared that Libya should be independent before 1952, after which independence was granted on December 24th, 1951, a constitutional monarchy under King Idris I. In 1959, the economy gained a large boost with the discovery of oil. However, discontent grew as the money from petroleum was kept by the King and the nation's elite, fueled by the rise of Nasserism.
