During the late middle ages and the renaissance, mercenaries like for instance the so-called Italian "compagnie di ventura" (that were largely deployed by Italian warring states) were noticed for their skill in battle, sometimes for their cruelty and many times for their unloyalty. Niccolò Machiavelli totally distrusted mercs for this reason and suggested to avoid them as much as possible.
I'd like to see a feature so that mercs can be bribed, or they can simply desert if they see that the enemy is richer or their current owner doesn't satisfy them anymore.
This was very common during EU4 times.
Anyway, not all mercenaries could be bribed, many of them also gave more importance to their oaths than to gold. Besides, a protestant Landsknecht hardly would accept to turn to the Papal Side, because they viewed Rome as the devil and hated the catholic church.
So a feature like this should have limitations and %s of success, rather than a simply "clic and gain these units" button.
Maybe mercenary captains (and admirals...) could also be featured, recruitable for money instead of military points, and one would have to deal with them if you don't want them to change side in the midst of a battle.
And what about the possibility to hire nomads for wars or protection during peacetime (that is gaining an alliance or a guarantee in exchange for gold)? They could become the mailed fist of your army... except when your king dies (and the nomad warlords see their duty as ended and their oath as null, leaving you alone, or even turning against you, like the Visigoths in the V century) or their king dies (thus returning to their motherland for the succession crisis).
