The other end of that is that the Firestarter for instance would need to have an absolutely ridiculous number of hardpoints (2 Ballistic, 6 Energy, 6 Support) to jive with this system if I'm correctly understanding the way you're postulating it.

That would be a natural consequence, yes. Basically to the limit of what the MWO hardpoints allow, before you start 'cutting corners' like thinking that MG rounds are coming out of the smaller hole in the laser box. o_O

And nowhere did I say that CBT customization rules preventing anything of the kind. Rather that the stated design goals of the HBS:BT system and its implementation are in existential conflict, which presents balancing concerns.

I'd be perfectly happy with a 1:1 stock environment or a full on "do whatever the hells you want if you have the time and C-Bills" environment. What is being presented right now is a very strange middle ground that tries to be both things and yet ends up being neither while also not succeeding at the stated goal of preserving an individual variant's essence.

Ah yes then we are indeed in agreement, carry on then :)

PDX Stream Youtube is now posted in the other thread.

Minute 24 is where they're outfitting the Locust. One can see that there is exactly one support hardpoint in each place there is a ballistic hardpoint, and one support hardpoint where the energy hardpoint is.

Similarly for the Spider, both support hard points are where the medium lasers would normally fit.

For the Centurion (which is a bit earlier), the support hardpoint is attached to the ballistic location.

And another thing about hardpoints.....nah I think everyone is sick of hearing me harping about them by now......

Wait, what? As a person who came to this game via MW2 this is mind blowing to me.

What is the distinction between 'standard' mechs and Omnimechs then? Because I thought it was the Omnimechs ability to mount whatever you can cram on there.

Hardpoints only came about after MechWarrior 3 or 4 I thought, MW2 didn't use any.(if memory serves)
Omnitechnology was the clans way of doing what the IS had always been able to do, but to be able to do it in the field quickly and easily. Without cost or needing a mechbay even.
They could completely change the mission profile of a mech in the field in a couple of hours with a makeshift bay, a couple of lifts, and some techs to do it.
The IS could also do that, just took a LOT of time, a LOT of c-bills, and a decent mech bay.

I thought MW2: Mercs had hardpoints, but that was so long ago. MW2 was all Omnimechs anyways.

That's pretty much what an Omni slot is. Any weapon can go into any slot. Want to make that vulture less ammo dependent? Remove the LRM, and slap on a ERPPC. That sort of thing.

Hardpoints are simply a way to limit the number of different graphical representations that need to be modeled for the game.

Perhaps your definition of chassis identity is different for HBS's? Just a thought.

I think that's the issue. No one really knows what HBS definition of "chassis identity" is. And when they think they do, HBS changes it.

I'm personally of the opinion that you're if the AC/20 on your Hunchback gets destroyed, you either replace it with a /20 or downgrade it with any AC you happen to have in storage. If you don't have one, then you either don't filed the unit or field it in its damaged state.

I feel that they've given out way too many hardpoints and that the "sprinkling" turned into a "dump". And while it does have the handy side-effect of, sorta, future proofing the game. It does make me wonder, if they're going with some of the hardpoints they are, why bother with hardpoints at all? They can/could keep the locked engines and internal structure (which in and of itself is going to be an interesting dilemma in the future) and just allowed us to do what we want as that's what the current hardpoint selections seem to allow.

Yeah, well. I've got a '94 edition of TRO-3025 that waves cheekily at you:
'Most variations of the Hunchback design have dropped this weapon for smaller weapon systems... these include SRM six racks, LRM 5 and 10 racks, increased numbers of medium lasers...Indeed a variety of weapons variations exist throughout the Successor States'

Proof in the pudding time. Abuse a Centurion, Shadowhawk, and Jenner with no restrictions then try again with the hardpoints. Let's look at them side by side.

Greetings Mechwarriors,

Please remember to avoid snark, getting hyperbolic, or posting AT each other. That is how discussion turns instead to flaming.

Thank you.
