Hi!

My plan is to start a new game with Lubeck and focus on trade and colonization. However, in my first two attempts Denmark annexed me within only a few years. They invade with an army about 10 000 men strong and I can't possibly have a standing army that large. I've tried to get an alliance with them but no luck yet.

Any help and ideas would be very appreciated!!

BTW, I'm plaing Magna Mundi Gold 1.79

Use your COT status to build up money, recruit an army of maybe 4000 and when denmark declares, buy every mercenary you can. Use loans to keep them paid, beat back the initial attack, take a province or two with your mass amount of infantry and ask for white peace. Use your ruler as a general to save money.

You'll probably end up with a less than great economy, but this strategy lets you survive as a 1 province minor in the early game.

Don't you start with an alliance with Hamburg and Bremen? The Hanse cities can be formidable allies. I played Bremen and no one dared touch our alliance. There's also the thing about the HRE guaranteeing nearly everyone in the empire.

cheers

Thanks for all your help!

I'll guess I'll save up some money for mercenaries and at the same time try to find som scary ally to dissuade Demark from attacking, and if they do, drive them away.

Another strategy I like to use when I'm just trying to gain a white peace against an overwhelming opponent is to avoid their main army, let them besiege me and then use a lot of cheap infantry to assault their provinces. With a little luck you should have enough warscore to make them accept a white peace or some ducats before they take anything from you.

The only problem is that the AI seems to succeed faster in sieges (possible "bonus").

Very simple. Try to raise your relations with them to at least +100. It's my strategy when I'm playing for small nations - to have good relations with all neighbors. Then, they won't declare war on you.

Burgomasters cannot marry.

For advice, you should probably focus on trade. That will give you the money to mint, which you will need to build up an army to keep Denmark off your back for long enough to allow Austria to guarantee your independence.

Also, propose trade agreements to Bremen and Hamburg, before you even unpause, at the start. That will give them an incentive to honor your alliance, when Denmark DOW's you.

Yeah, but assault is faster than siege as long as you have enough infantry to win.

Your best bet if Denmark is your biggest threat is to get Sweden as your Ally. To play them off each other. But the best short term solution is to do what the AI does and build your army 3 times your support limit and mint. Also use your monarch as a general in the beginning and hopefully you win enough battles to start getting land prestige. Keep one big army instead of multiple also. during war time supplement your main army with a bunch of mercenaries to take his provinces from him on other fronts. This will force him to split his troops or keep sending them back and forth. Settle for the first white peace he offers. When you have a truce use your army to conquer neighbors and grow your empire.

That was what I did in my game and it worked out well. I quickly built up a small to discourage them from attacking me while focusing on trade and having a large sum of money in case I needed mercenaries. When Austria had guaranteed me it was no longer a problem.

Then luckily Morocco captured the Canaries from Castile so I could get a port to colonize from later :)
