I'm playing Denmark, and my 2. king is dying (he's 77yo). I have that succession law where the strongest person in the country gets to be king.

However when my king dies and this new guy is instated, the loyalty is like 10% and dropping, and within a couple of days the rebellions start. And trying to quench them only makes things worse. With the close connection between loyalty and BB it's virtually impossible to get things turned around. My old king had plenty of gold, prestige and piety and an honourable rep. NOTHING of this rubs off on the new guy (except the gold). I've decided to take all the provinces under my own adm. and see if my BB will get better so I can reinstate some counts.

Can anyone tell me what to do in this case?

PS. The new king was previously an "ordinary" courtier - ha had no land or anything. Does that make any difference?

Well, there is a point with giving your prospective heir some land well before he takes over the kingdom, it'll help him get some piety and prestige for himself. Other than that I can't see why their loyalty should be dropping if you have a good reputation.

Maybe just nobody likes him :p I'm guessing that the courtier thing would be a big part of it, though.

Perhaps he has a trait that the other folks don't think too kindly of?

I think it's been pointed out elsewhere but I'll reitterate it here, it is possible to achieve some amazing things during one king's reign, but it's very difficult sometimes to keep it all together when the succession changes. It might be (is!) necessary to plan ahead to the future generations when playing if you want to ensure that all your glorious achievements don't go down the drain when a new king is crowned. :)

I am finding that I need a paradigm shift when playing this game:

As a strategy gamer, I am used to all of my life looking at Nation vs Nation. I play as England? So I need to watch France, Scotland and Wales, these are my immediate enemies.

NO. This is not true about CK. The game is about your dynasty, not your nation (remember the concept of the nation-state unheard of in Europe at this time). So, your first and nearest enemies are going to be your vassals and other rivals to the throne, as was true to the period. It is only once you have your royal house in order that you can expand your 'country'... in reality expanding your personal lands and the lands of your loyal vassals.
