If they do, at some point in the future, end up re-adding old assets I hope that they'll be brought up to the same increased standard and that ruler clothing will be more closely related with ethos and authority, so at least I don't end up with my authoritarian bureaucrat, or military dictator looking like they're dressed up for some fancy gala anymore.
That is pretty valid. My communist utopia game shouldn't have some Met Gala outfit, and neither should my pacifist empire have military garb

I understand the complaints about lack of variety, funny looking moustaches, not enough hairstyles for women, ect. But how can anyone think the new portraits look worse?

I agree. They aren't perfect, but they look fine and in some cases, more realistic. That particular example shows just how bad *some* (not all) of the old portarits were.

I don't mind the faces much, but having less variety (some haircuts/outfits removed) is unequivocally a bad thing for a character creator.

The portraits aren't unique, they all look the same. They do not match the other portraits in the game, while the new ones are trying to look more realistic (Making them a bit creepy in their failure to do so), they do not honor the style of the more cartoonish portraits of the other species. An upgrade would be amazing, but this isn't an upgrade, it is a replacement. They took away content from us by doing so, we have less unique clothing and hairstyles, fewer colors, and variations. They do look nicer, but you have to think of the context of the entire game. Stick with the style, or make all the other portraits the same level.

Right may be more "realistic", but left has far more personality and is more visually striking.

If I was a conspiracy theorist, I would say this was a deliberate change to make humans more in line with "woke" ideology. Either that, or Paradox just subscribes to the theory that "future humans" are all gonna look homogenous for some reason like some parts of Science suggest.

It had to have been on purpose, there's no way a mistake this obvious went unnoticed. Unfortunately, all these changes did, was make me never wanna play human again, because outside of the Clone Origin, these portraits make no damn sense.
Except that if you look in the user_empire_designs_v3.4.txt file, there are still gendered ruler titles saved. Some eager programmer clearly restructured that file (hence the new _v3.4 postfix) but didn't correctly hook it back into the UI, and somehow that all got missed in testing.

But nah you're right, this is totally part of the grand culture war. Keep fighting the good fight solider, and remember to never touch grass.

The left one has it's issues. Meanwhile the issues the right one has.

- Looks incredibly androgynous. You can literally switch out the heads between the men and women.
- Is deeply in the uncanny valley.
- Virtually all of them look incredibly similar. To the point that they seem as if rather than creating different people and ethnicities, they just slightly changed the color shader.
- There isn't enough contrast. The colors blend together. Look at the hair between the two. The hair on the left is very distinct from the model and has clear contours. The one on the left is flat, blends in with the background and itself.

Looking again, I do agree the facial features/structures are all too similar as well. I unfortunately feel the same about both the odd facial lack of variety as well as that the clothing doesn't look as cool.

Please add back more visually-distinct human faces back if you can, and please add back more clothing options. We dearly miss our medals and amulets.

This is quite the odd thing.
There's technically more options now, yet it feels more limited.

The hairstyles are less varied and feel more samey.
Especially the female ones that look far less attractive. Where are the long hair options?

Regarding the "Ethic"/Phenotype choices, it seems like one specific choice suddenly became barely present. Seems quite deliberate to me..

What's most puzzling here is that it they REMOVED the old ones in favor of the new ones, instead of just adding on it.

The female bodies are also almost 100% identical to the male bodies. And their face structure is eerily similar too. This honestly feels like they did the change on a very tight budget, did the male characters first, then slightly altered the female ones.

So all of the portraits look incredibly similar, with very little difference. And they also look as if they were all hiding in the shadows, they lack contures.

I love how riled up you get, when I wasn't even talking about the stupid ruler titles, first of all. That's clearly an error. Secondly, I offered more than 1 possible explanation, but naturally, you just want to paint it in a way so I look unreasonable. Whatever lol

I understand the complaints about lack of variety, funny looking moustaches, not enough hairstyles for women, ect. But how can anyone think the new portraits look worse?

What in the shrouds name is wrong with people? The new portraits are much better looking.

Except here's the thing

This is way better, in every way. All you folks who refuse to use mods for no reason, are really missing out.

That's exactly what this looks like, like they only had enough time to basically make 1 face, then make slight tweaks to that face. It feels very lazy or rushed. Either way the result is the same. Clone humans that come from the Uncanny Valley.

Seems less likely to have been a bug or oversight at this point, it would have been really easy for anyone to pop in and say they were working on it. The question now is if Paradox is going to man up and say anything about it, or are they just going to let the rampant "race discussion" (to put it mildly) that is happening on the Steam forums continue and pretend they did nothing wrong. Regardless of the "quality" of the new portraits, taking a single face and running it through a tanning bed 5 times is not the racial diversity players expect. It's common knowledge that most people play humans in these games, and most players refuse to ever touch mods, so this has turned into a pretty heated issue.

It's also worth noting some of the stuff removed was part of the Humanoids Species pack DLC and is still advertised on the store as being part of that DLC.

I felt deeply compelled to log in for the sole purpose of adding my two cents here that there is no way I am playing a new playthrough of Stellaris with this portrait set. Reverting wholesale to the previous one feels preferable to this... mess of indistinguishable masses. Paradox, please reconsider. Don't do this to the humans.
