Europe Ablaze's got 8 regular players and we get 8-10 years in per session. That's with myself hosting, not that it's a shameless plug for my inclusion or anything ;) But I certainly understand what you're saying, with large games you do get lag and sometimes need to pause for a while to let people catch up. Let me know how it goes, and post an AAR, it should be a fun game.

Lamprey,
How many hours do you play?? Just curious.

Last session was about 6 hours.

We had break sometimes, for example, last time, Ottoman player dropped out. Players quit and waited for Ottoman to come back online for about 20-30 minutes or so.

I think 2nd session was about 6 hours and played for about 6 or 7 game years. It's been more or less 1 game year per hour, depends on lag and real life situations (first session took some time to iron out the wrinkles)

One game year per hour. Thanks for the info. I guess we will have to see how it goes.

In my experience, best host is the following

1. fastest CPU, the faster, the better. Also at least 512MB RAM
2. big bandwith and in a central location.

Example, I experienced less lag in a 7 player game with lamprey as host. Lamprey has cable and 3ghz CPU.

I had more trouble in 4 player game, (1 USA east, 1 Canada east, 1 USA west, 1 Swiss) when the host (USA east) is only running on 2 ghz and on cable too. The Swiss player and I (USA west) had a lot of problems. When Lamprey was hosting, due to his faster cpu (he and spex are both USA east and on cable so I assume same bandwith). My theory is all those trigger eats up memory and cpu cycle so if our Swiss player has better bandwith, he should be the host as he has 2ghz athlon64 system with 1GB ram or more.

Faster response game is more enjoyable for everyone. If you can enforce no pause unless necessary, you should get more than 1 game year / hour. We had soem hiccups and delays initially which slowed us down but in 2 sessions, we went from 1836 to 1849.
