Italian markets do not exist so others may profit off of our goods. Five merchants from Portugal, Netherlands, England, and the Pope (the main competitors) fills it up. However, Poland, France, Austria and many minors also would like access. In the competition, my Italian breathren under the Church are victimized. I will not allow foreign men to come onto our soil and put us out of business.

If you can get England to take the embargo for you, me embargoing English instead of dutch, I will shift the embargo. It is unlikely. There is simply no room for the Dutch in Italy. Please, trade somewhere else? What's wrong with Kansas, or Nevada? ;)

The netherlands has as much of a right to trade in these COTs as Portugal, or England or Poland or France or Austria. Our traders are simply better at it, which leads to us having more merchants in these COTs. As previously stated it is the policy of the Netherlands to regard an embargo as an act of war and act accordingly.

We kindly remind the sovereigns of Europe we warned the good Dutch merchants would multiply like rabbits in an English meadow. They have and so it is indeed. We hold them no ill will. However we remind the Dutch and English not all soveriegns treat their center of trade as open, or as you refer "free" markets. It is their right as a sovereign nation. We know not of any "rights" of any sovereign power to trade in another sovereign's center of trade.

Good trade thoughts for all,
Duque Carlos-Joan de Miro y Bourbon
Foreign Minister to his Majesty the Kings of Spain

It might be the right of a sovereign nation to close its market to another, but it is also the right of that nation to do everything in its power to open those markets, including the use of force (Embargo gives a CB for a reason ;)).

Poland

To make it clear, Poland will defend the Pope from Dutch aggression (note that this statement does not necessary apply to Papal aggression). We will not interfere with the invasion of Albania (who are we to question the representative of God? Although crushing the newly independent Albanians is not a nice thing to do). We contine to call for independence for Muenster and Magdaberg (if done, we will release Vorpommern).

Also, is Austria planning to release the Swiss? Or are there plans for a Franco-Austrian war, part II.

And on another note, I have to say that this game is very unusual in the number of 1 on 1 wars fought (especially in the later part of the game). It was great to see a Franco-Austrian war that didn't draw in anyone else. That's practically unique.

How can you call for the independence of Mϋnster? Our royal line inherited them much like Poland inherited the commonwealth of Lithuania. You have no more right to demand the release of Mϋnster than we have to demand Lithuanian or Ukrainian independence. As for Madgeburg it was taken as punishment for repeaded aggression from Berlin. Brandenburg has declared war on other sovereign nations eleven times throughout the course of this campaign, twice on Poland if you remember. His recent attack on our vassal Mϋnster was the third time he has attacked said nation. The Brandenburger has also attacked our ally Sweden three times. He is a menace and needs to be contained, and Dutch peacekeepers have taken the fortress of Madgeburg to maintain order in the area. The Dutch Stradholder also finds it hard to comprehend that Poland, which has conquered four German provinces demands that the Netherlands release its two German provinces, one of which it inherited, another it took defending its vassal from aggression.

As for the trade war that may or may not happen, if the Pope insists on calling his allies, the Netherlands will have no choice but to escalate the conflict and ask Sweden to help us defend our nation.

He has ordered that Prime Minister Barca will be left in charge of the Dutch Republic while the Stdtholder is vacationing. All orders, actions, and treaties entered into during Barca's tenure are officially sanctioned by the Stadholder and will be official Dutch policy.

Response

Your comparison is quite incorrect. The Lithuanians initiated the merger of Poland and Lithuania, not the Poles. The correct example would be the incorporation of Moldova into Poland, which was initiated by the Polish people.

However, the northern German lands have always been seen as another case. The region has remained largely peaceful thanks to the cooperation between Sweden, Poland, France, and Austria. It has been a long-standing agreement that the area would be free of outside control.

We do not agree with the Dutch entrance into northern Germany and hope you will change your position. We will not intervene yet, but any further territorial acquisitions in German lands will be a cause for war with Poland, and the new land corridor with Netherlands enables us to make good on this threat. As for Magdaburg, it seems absurd to think that Sweden needs protection from Brandenberg. After Brandenberg's losses to Poland and Sweden, it is no threat to any of its neighbors. Your excuse for possession of Magdaberg is just that, an excuse, and a transparent one at that.

As for Moldova, its over a century too late to complain about that, and far from the Dutch sphere of influence.

And relating to the trade debate, hopefully that will remain an issue only between the Pope and Dutch as the Poles and Swedes have no interest in fighting one another.

Despite Dutch threats, the Church will not yield to the will of the barbaric traders who wish to overrun our cities and put our citizens, direct subjects of the Church and God, out of business and into poverty.

Would anybody mind if I sent our save game to Tonioz so that he could post it on his website? If you guys have never seen it, he has a website that extracts game data into really awesome graphs and tables. I was going to send it to him earlier, but thought that I'd ask y'all if any of you minded? Is doesn't give away any secret data or information that is not readily available in the ledger, so I don't think anyone would have any problerms with it. But I did want to check just in case.

Another proposed rule. In many games the limit on the number of provinces that can be taken in a war is removed in either 1700 or 1750. I propose we do the same; it then falls to the players (presumably all nations have large armies etc by this time) as well as common decency to keep countries intact ;)

For next game I have no problem to increase # of prov. you can take in a war after 1750. But there has to be limit. 5 or 6 in Europe and maybe 10 in colonies per war should be fine.

Expanding the province rule would either be designed for greater AI bashing or crippling a player nation. It should be obvious I am not really for 'Attack the AI, ignore the players'. And there should not be a gigantic war because the game is about to end.

All,
I know some of you dont remember, but on March 18th, my wife will be having our second child. So, needless to say, I will be indisposed for a while and the session on March 12th will probably be my last for this game. I do want to be considered for the next game but my family needs time to get back into some semblance of order and that means I need to be there for a few weeks on Friday.
Therefore, after next session, I am going to ask Strix to take over Austria. Since we might be losing 2 players in Vince and Lethke, this will give us a chance to see what kind of player he might be and also give him a chance to see what adjustments he might have to make to play multi-player.

Amazing, this will be the third player to have a kid born between the two games I'm playing. Am I not getting with the program or what? Or is everyone starting to think about heirs already?

Sounds like I'll be needed in the next game, at least until cc returns. Maybe we can trade off playing a nation or something.

As for province limits, the thing is, you can't stabhit someone for more than 5 provinces or so usually, so any limit over 5 provinces is rather pointless really. I'm inclined to keep the province rule for this game. I'd hate to see any country torn apart (especially since its most likely to be my own) in the late game.

As for the next game, have we decided between IES and 1492? It might also make sense to try IES for a session and see what everyone thinks of it (also to see if its stable).

All,
I know some of you dont remember, but on March 18th, my wife will be having our second child.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Do you know if its a boy or girl? How do you know it will come on the 18th? Targett date, or will the childbirth be induced. Sorry if the questions are too personal, I get excited when people have children. :D

BTW: If you haven't selected a name yet, may I reccommend Pimp Shizzle. Its classy, elegant, gender neutral, and most importantly, will ensure your child has tons of friends growing up!
