Not as a fifth ethos, but as a third kind next to asleep and aweakened.

As your ships scour the unexplored reaches of space you come across something mysterious. A handful of systems all share some striking features. They are full of Barren, Toxic and Tomb Worlds, ancient debris and parts of destroyed ships. Remnants of a vast ancient civilization. Perhaps there's even an unfinished Ring World there. At the heart of this discovery lies their ancient capital - not the Skyfather, not the Celestial Throne, but a system of planets that were torn apart, destroyed by ancient superwapons.

The tomb worlds are not filled by standard atomic-era ruins, but a highly advanced ones, with large science boosts. There may even be one or two standard world types - border worlds that were not scrouged so thoroughly.

As you explore this area a Fallen Empire contacts you, even if you haven't met them yet. They worn you - stay away. Let dead men lie in their tombs. If you do not listen there may be consequences.

Undaunted, you continue your search and there is a chance, just a chance, not a guarantee, that you will find something.

Someone or something flashes on-screen. For a long time, they waited. Hidden, amongst what little is left of their home. You may try to spill their location to the Fallen Empire who warned you, but they will simply disappear again. And they will give you nothing, but if you'd just listen.

Their wait has been long, but if you are strong enough, then you might be just what they need. If not, they may contact you again later.

All they want is one thing...

They will share with you some of their old secrets. They will aid you with what little fleet thay still have, if you agree to give them one thing.

Revenge.

They were once mighty, but they have lost their War in Heaven. They were crushed and punished horribly for daring to oppose their ancient rivals, but now is the time for their enemies to pay.

But beware. The Fallen Empire watches. And when they see the old technologies back in use, they will begin to muster their troops again. Time is short. You must work quickly. The Dead will help you, give you blueprints of advanced factories, share some of their ship designs.

And when the time is right...

The galaxy will see them rise again.

I think this might make for a really good story pack thing they could add like they did with Leviathans and the War in Heaven.

An Alternative that runs along the similar lines might be for the whole Dead Empire thing to actually be more like the Shadows from the tv series Babylon 5. An Empire that has been in hibernation for thousands of years on supposedly "Dead Worlds," however, they wake up for one reason or another (perhaps it was something you did). Now they are moving again gathering their forces and such for some agenda of their own. They could end up a threat to you and the galaxy, or you could ally with them and see where it leads for good or bad.

One way to stop players from occupying and building up the system is to have the former enemies get mad at you and attack if you build anything in the dead systems. They'd have a wargoal to force all those structures to be dismantled, but also have a low warscore wargoal against them to relinquish their claim over the region. This lets you do research and quests in the area, but prevents players from colonizing and exploiting resources until after they've fought the fallen empire or have sufficiently placated them.

I just got the homeworld of the cybrex, and while i had heard of the let down i was still expecting a partially functioning ringworld. What i got was 15 enginering and 2 living metal. Really horrible. this has me really convinced that they desperatly need something like this in the game. If they do it right itd be super cool

I got 20 engineering and 4 living metal at a time when my engineering was less than 100. I was happy. Now, Fen Habbanis (Coruscant), which is just a small one-time bonus, was a real letdown, especially after all this talk of a multi-species empire. Some of the precursor chains could use a follow-up (e.g. find the former homeworlds of X species that were part of the First League (Galactic Republic)).

honestly the only real storyline to the campaign is the precursor chain, and yet its also the most disappointing part of the game. I think it could've been much better with some unique techs coming in that can only be gotten with each different home world. maybe even some of the cut scenes like they did in the home world series. at this point, the leviathans have more awe, risk, reward and build up of suspense than the precursor chain. I found they even gave my game an informal story of sorts. my empire was a science empire and I imagined the entire empire had the one goal of studying and hunting down these leviathans. it was lots of fun until I wiped them all out. now its just the slow grind to defeat the remaining two fallen empires. with same serious work put into it, the precursor chain could be great. unfortunately not

Perhaps also some synth populations to maintain the watch, that could be bargained with?
They should generally all be Synth pops, but with a different name to indicate that they simply placed their last few minds into those metallic shells. This would give their name "Dead" an actual meaning, and stuff about them could be written so... uniquely from all other encounters.

The science ship ISS Enterprise has only had time to send one last message before they vanished. Captain James T. Kirk reports that they have found some kind of robotic lifeforms on the surface of Beacon Delta V. The away team had disappeared just shortly before the ISS Enterprise did so too, and their sensor logs suggest that some kind of ancient weapons platform activated when they approached one of the numerous debris fields, tearing them apart with huge forces emitted by green energy beams not unlike the Yalon Ascendancy's tachyon lances, but much stronger.

They should be known as "Forgotten Empires"
Ancient empires who lost a war in heaven before the start of the game for the player. I like the concept you've created here.

This could be amazing. So much potential. Lets hope it reaches it.

So something in the middle of the alien regions (mining robots and crystal entities and so), the ancient questlines and fallen empire? I like it, makes it sort of a pathway between.

I agree with this idea, and propose that the dead FEs be found through the precursor event chains....

There should be somthing like this able to happen at the end of all the precursor chains. The current ones aren't worth much as is, but somthing like this would really help give them some value. Not always this exact thing but variations of it with each precursor chain would be nice

I agree with this idea, and propose that the dead FEs be found through the precursor event chains....

While I too would like to see the precursor event chains expanded, I think the Dead would not fit them, mainly for story reasons:

- The Cybrex gave up and let themselves be destroyed – they would not seek vengeance;

- The First League broke from within – they already exacted their vengeance via mutually assured starvation;

- The Irassian Concordad was wiped out by a plague – it’s hard to take revenge on viruses;

- The Vultaum Star Assembly – most of them committed suicide;

- The Yuht Empire were hundred meter across arthropods that stagnated technologically – an awesome idea to find some alive, but in a different event.

All of those stories could have awesome followups. I would love to see for example, an AI rebellion resulting in the Cubrex contacting you and offering to upload themselves to the rebelious robots. Or the Jovan Pox resurfacing and you seeking the cure.

Yes they all are finished and dead at the end of thier storylines, but like i said, variations of this concept could be applied to each. For instance:

-there are hints of internal disputes among the cybrex as to whether to continue thier ancient crusade against living organisms, and after finding the cybrex homeworld, thier long dead technology points to a place where these hostile cybrex may still survive.

-a member state of the first league, broken and bitter, still barely suvives on a harsh world in a near dead system on the edge of the galaxy. Here lies many preserved remnants of thier technology, but also the bitter and violent remains of the first league.

-the virus that wiped out the concordat once again ravages our galaxy. U must discover thier dortified quarinteen zone in of the concordiat, and there may lie thier reserch on this virus, and there may lie the secret to its cure.

-the last surviving member of the vultrum star assembly, a creature older than all life in the galaxy, hooked into the machinery of an artificial planet, has been found from data on thier homeworld. He may be a great source of information, or he may be our empires greatest threat.

-on a prison world in a system built by a long gone fallen empire, a member of a yuht empire, the last, is held. Legends found on computers of dead ships found around the yuht homeworld, apparently belonging to said fallen empire, say that the yuht in the prison wraps around the entire world. The yuht member may have great knowledge to advance our empire, or releasing him may bring true ruin to our universe.

See, with slight variation depending on each precursor u could have quite an interesting continuation to each storyline.

I know I'm bringing up an old thread, but I think that with the changes coming up to Stellaris having a cut-off part of galaxy with the ruins of a fallen empire is going to be even more fiting than ever and I did not want to post it again with a changed explenation for why I think this would be a good idea, so here's just the explanation, while the idea is in the original post. The Dead could be hidden behind a non-functioning Abandoned Gateway, which could only be opened mid-to-late game and the Dead could have a chance of becoming a mid game crisis if they decide to turn on you after you avenge them.

I think this would be great once they revamp the first-contact mechanics and add intrigue mechanics. This would likely make it easier to implement a thing like this.

Yep, and specifically re the Irassian Concordad, they could have not just a horrible virus, but a devouring plague pop on the Fallen Ringworld, like Halo's Flood. If you trigger its release during a survey of the Ringworld, it begins to rapidly reproduce and becomes a Devouring Swarm empire as a Midgame Crisis.
