Possibly a notification when the first battle commences. You get a notification stating that "A new tank has been spotted on the battlefield! It is a cause for concern!" Or something along those lines.

Is this too much to ask or does it seem doable?

This is a really cool idea, and in theory shouldn't be too hard to code as we're now tracking equipment. Have a table somewhere that has 'latest equipment encountered' for each enemy', and run a check against it at the start of each land/naval battle (and maybe every day or two for air regions for aircraft). You could even have something along the lines of "reports from the front suggests that it has stronger armour" (or guns/reliability/whatever). Would be a good feedback mechanism, and reflect to a degree how encounters with stronger tanks/aircraft lead to counters being developed (I think there should be a role for intelligence here as well, but that's another thread).

Yeah im not sure about the coding haha. But there could be several ways it could be done. But naturally you would only realize after the first battles. Germany/USA/Britain learned much after they first captured enemy equipment.

I love it. There could be events where you capture enemy equipment and see if the AI has gone for improving armour (I assume the AI takes advantage of the variant system too) and if so, you could improve your anti-tank capabilities to respond to that.

I guess in hoi3 they had no idea if they were new or not when their gun is upgraded and engine but not the armour and reliability to when it does happen a new tank magically appears or something. I mentioned something like this in an idea thread I made (point 5) but not only knowing that you have encountered a new tank of the enemy but also allowing you to use captured units of it to accelerate your technology upgrading speed if the enemy is a head of you.

What about secret upgrades? I think I read somewhere that Germany had a research breakthrough in tanks (armour it was?). Hitler decided to slowly adapt the tanks to this new model so that the other side didn't instantly copy all of the new installations which would waste all the german resources.

Well it takes many months after a tank/plane/gun is captured to figure out how it is used.
You have to first send it back to HQ who sends it to the labs to get a proper analysis. This data is then sent to HQ. Based on the Analysis, HQ then has to make a decision on if it is worth it to make a weapon equivalent
That whole process could take over a month. And then getting the models designed, testing then approved. And THEN pushed into production.. By then the war may be over haha.

@SeargeantPunch, It is a cool idea but at this stage I don't think Paradox is really going to be adding anything that hasn't been pre-planned. The idea is cool, keep pushing for it maybe it will be in a dlc or expansion.

@everyone-else, Im glad you like the idea! Tell the developers about it!

The idea is realistic as in the german panther tank was spurred by contact with the t-34 especially the sloped armour. Certainly it will have to make you think about upgrading to new armour and it makes sense that it accelerates development in game. Your idea is already mentioned within mine I guess as it naturally implies you will know what the enemy is operating and yeah including the use of captured enemy tanks and this will have to be displayed in your equipment pool.

I hope we can reuse enemy tanks! I dont think they have mentioned that though.
They mentioned we can reuse captured equipment but that could mean that a captured tank will disintegrate into raw materials! Who knows haha.
The Germans did capture French tanks, dissemble them, and use the barrels for fortifications while using the chassis to move artillery in the east.
SO it would make sense to have captured tanks disintegrate into raw materials... But thats talk for another day haha.

How will it mean raw materials when we already know from the tank tree you will be making actual tanks and not raw materials? The germans used actual french tanks as well, the soviets used actual german tanks, and visa versa.

Thats exactly the reason I suggested this haha.
If I know where the enemy is deploying there new heavy tanks or bombers, then I can attach another anti-tank battalion or extra fighters to the area. Will add more angles to production in my opinion.

Uhh, I think I would need a source on that one...
The fundamental reason is that the three countries you mention had vastly different tank designs. The vast of French tanks required less personnel than the German tanks. German tank crews were trained especially for different roles. French tank crews required the men to do several things at once which reduced their speed and efficiency. That was the main reason Germans tended to either convert French tanks or dissemble them for other purposes.

And the raw materials are the steel, and whatever else was needed to make a tank.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Char_B1

Well to start this one was used , and it was one of the more cumbersome ones at that.

"A number of Char B1's (161) were captured by the Germans during the Fall of France. These were later pressed into service as second line and training vehicles under the name of Panzerkampfwagen B-2 740 (f). Sixty became platforms for flamethrowers as Flammwagen auf Panzerkampfwagen B-2 (f). Sixteen were converted into 105 mm self-propelled artillery. Ordinary tank versions were also frequently modified. For example, additional armour was placed above the main gun, and a winch mechanism was added behind the turret. One unit, Panzer-Abteilung 213, was equipped with the Char B1 bis and deployed on the Channel Islands from 1941 to 1945. One of their tanks is displayed by the Bovington Tank Museum, though repainted in French colours. In German service, the tank saw action in the Balkans Campaign and the Eastern Front, initially during Operation Barbarossa, the flamethrower version from 1942 onwards"

Obviously modified but they didn't imaginary melt them into metal dust as you think , ha ha and so forth.

I see you are as dishonest with your "Idea" as with the idea of using captured enemy equipment. From them "disintegrating into raw material" to the next post where they are then all of a sudden modified. Yeah, ha ha indeed.

Now the somua

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SOMUA_S35

"During the German invasion of May 1940, the SOMUA S35 proved itself to be a tactically effective type, but this was negated by strategic mistakes in deploying its units. After the defeat of France in June 1940, limiting production to a number of 430, captured SOMUA S35s were used by the Axis powers. A derived type, the SOMUA S40, with an improved suspension, lowered hull cast and welded turret armour, had been planned to replace the original version on the production lines in July 1940."
