I never liked the culture-converion mechanics. Talking to a friend, after reading another topic here in the forums, I though of some alternatives:

1. After 50 years cored and controlled, a progress bar starts. Speeding varying according to Diplomatic Reputation, Distance to Capital, Local Autonomy and Accepted Culture Threshold. It would be similar to the "de jure" mechanics of occupation in CK2 (that case is 100 years). If main country of that culture still "alive", the speed progress bar is doubled (i.e. 100 years).

2. You can speed things up with 3 options:

a) Mandatory Adaptation: spend X ADM points to enforce "new-citizenzship". Inspired in the "new christian laws" of Spain and Portugal in the XVI century. To quickly assimilate them, and forbids the expression of foreign culture (sephardin judaism and morrish islamism).

b) Mass Deportations: spend X DIP points to spread the target population among your provinces. Chance of perma-loosing 1 BT, and increases local and national unrest for a while. Bonus if you have colonies to deport your "trouble-makers". This "tool" was used by many countries to alter the ethnicity and conform conquered lands into their wishes, and some countries did this a lot in the time-frame of the game (UK with its colonies and Ottomans in its conquered lands).

c) Purge: spend X MIL points to, well... purge the local foreigners, speeding the progress bar. Massive BT penalty for a while, giving causus belli to all countries with that culture as main cultre. Penalty to relations with bordering countries: "Oppressing Minorities". Purge of minorities - unfortunately - was a real tool during the time-frame of the game and it would be a nice tool to have in game.

What you guys think? I'm sure it needs improvement.

Anything that is not the current system, though I do believe that therre should be some sort of action required by the player and no auto-conversion.

As is, I still think you should not be able to convert a province on the same continent as you capital as long as you do not have a province of your culture next to it. And you should only be able to convert coastal provinces on other continents and then works inwards with an adjacency requirement.

The first one seems good, though maybe make it take longer than 100 years, and give you the ability to speed it up (with religous ideas) or stop (with humanism).

The second also seems good, though I think that's more religion than culture.

The third is a penal colony, so I don't really think that will work.

The fourth is WAY too close to genocide, I don't think that will ever be added.

I think denying that genocide happened is even worse. It did happen and should be a mechanic if this is implemented, but the player should be discouraged to use it.

I was just trying to point out that nobody really cares what is morally or ethically right. It is a historical video game. Stuff happens. I have a hard time seeing Paradox reject this based on the fact that genocide is not a nice thing to do. Many events and actions simulate mss murders and executions in the game.

Well, this game is already regarded as a "genocide simulator" in some articles. Would it be a real trouble to further "prove" the point?

We already got the "Cleansing of Heresy", "Imperialism", "Colonialism", "Colonial Conquest" casus belli... To actually have a "purge" action, will not be that far... will be?

The thing is that in Spain and Portugal, being christian was enough - at that time - to be considered a spaniard, in opposition to the muslim and the jews that were considered foreigners. so, people, became citizens just by converting - sometimes a crypto-conversion, since being a "new-christian" was kind of pejorative in some regions. This was a time that people did not have papers, IDs and stuff. Your religion and appearance was enough to prove your "nationality", so a conversion was like a nationalization, crucial to a spanish/portuguese identity.
