It's not copy protection. This patch could cheerfully install over EU3 without NA. However you do get a rather nasty crash on load. To prevent this from happening the installer makes sure that you have NA installed.

Because I encountered the same error when trying to install the patch, but did a clear reinstall and that solved the problem. Should I come to the forums to seek help instead of reinstalling first, might I have gotten a ban myself?![]()

I think the person just made a mistake and thought that the 2.1 patch was for regular EU3

If so, making a back-up cd is kinda useless if you want to be able to install patches.
