You can see it in motion at their twitch stream here. Go to 20:10 for a look at it.

Imo they look great. Maybe they're not perfect visualisations of what mathematically a black hole would look like from up close but that doesn't matter as much as how good it looks to the player. I think everybody who sees it will say, wow, that's a freaking black hole and it looks awesome.

Well done artists at Paradox, well done. :)

The old black hole was fine. It matched basic sci-fi shorthand for black holes, clearly indicated a danger. It did what it had to do. It was good enough.

...is what most devs would have said. But apparently functional and "good enough" isn't good enough for Paradox's art team. I seriously appreciate that you guys decided to listen to your fans (as raucous as we sometimes are) and put in the extra effort!

Yes, I love this. I also like that (apparently from the stream) each black hole gets a name that sounds suitably dangerous.

I know it's not perfect, but I have to believe that the gravitational lensing effect would be extremely difficult to produce, and also, the amount of lensing would (IIRC?) vary depending on the solar masses of the black hole, where a black hole with greater mass would have a much more noticeable effect on all light around it. I notice that nobody is complaining about the lack of relative time in the game, which would be a concern around a black hole, even a relatively non-massive one.

Now... if we can visit the center of a galaxy the supermassive black hole there might warrant some special art.

It should be smaller, a black hole the size of the star it used to be would still be that star, the definition of a black hole is that it's collapsed to a much smaller size.

Also I'm kind of anti anything that's inspired by interstellar, terrible movie.

If it were to the same scale as the regular stars (or even to scale of the planets) a stelar-mass black hole would be invisible. A black hole with ten times the mass of the sun would have a radius of about 30 km. So I think it's a good decision not to scale them to other stellar objects in the game.

Considering that nether the size nor the distance of other objects in the planetary systems is anything close to that of real life, I would say that the same applies to black holes as well. A necessary choice, really, since anything that is close to the scale of reality would be utterly unplayable: if we are to fill the entire monitor with a single planetary system (physical size of the screen does not really matter here), then even the largest planet would be single-pixel at best, and microscopic at worst. Even if only the size of the bodies are proportional, most terrestrial planets probably would be dwarfed by the gas giants to the point they remind you of the good old days of pixel hunting of point-and-click games. ;)

Could you explain why the Stellaris is a terrible movie?
