Since you can turn the camera that would look really weird.
Yes. Exactly. It would look eerily weird.

Well, it's a 3D game. And what you're seeing is its event horizon, that's kind-of round per definition. The actual hole is inside that, and it's literally impossible to see what it looks like.
It is completely impossible to see the black hole itself, which is why I think we wouldn't be able to see its curves. It would always look like a black disk from any direction we would look, since it all would be total blackness, without any variety in coloration.

* Discover black hole
* Looks so good you park all your ships in the system to gawp at it
* Your fleet gets destroyed by freak gravitational tides
* Your worlds left defenceless, enemies move in
* Lose planet after planet, billions of citizens virus-bombed and enslaved by pitiless foes
* Game Over

10/10 would play again

A new destruction event in the game! A black hole feeding and sending huge energy jets to destroy nearby systems.

While that is indeed what they look like in real life, I suspect that an attempt to represent that in game would just end up looking ugly.

I really like the new image. It has the Black Sun sort of vibe to it, but the gas clouds around it make it easily visible and iconically recognisable.

Why wouldnt we see the matter that is circling a black hole if you look at it? If something is between you and the black hole that emits radiation, you would see that or not?

Maybe. Maybe not. Just a suggestion for black holes look from me. I do like this one too.

Will black holes also bend the looks of everything behind them, or is that too much to ask :p?

A disk? Black holes aren't actually holes in space, like some sort of wormholes but without an end point, they're spaces around singularities, extremely small points of massive gravity. So massive that there's a range in which nothing, not even light, can escape its pull. That's what makes the whole phenomenon spherical-looking (well, technically the accretion disk just outside of the event horizon, IIRC).

This black hole looks really cool and seems more than accurate enough.

You're right that if there was matter circling the black hole outside of its event horizon, we would be able to see that silhouetted against the hole itself. However, we suspect that the vast majority of black holes don't have appreciate accretion rings and so are not visible through that method.

It occurs to me that I may have misunderstood erez87's post. If so then please forgive my confusion.

You understood me I think, just that you think it may look ugly, I guess they can try and decide, if they have time and resources to redo black holes all day long :p

And Gothic, it would LOOK like a disc, not actually be one. It wouldn't have color variations to show up its curves, so at an overlook it would always look like a black disk from every direction...

Ah, I see what you mean. Well, I think that's not giving the accretion disk enough credit. It's how we 'see' them in real life, so I totally get why they appear like they do now.
Also, because it's a game, having a big black sphere against a black background wouldn't really work from a design point, I'd think (but what do I know).

What I mean is pretty much this exact design, just remove the color variation that make the black hole look bulby and like a sphere. The black hole itself should be just total blackness.

Regardless, most black holes will simply not be massive enough or be consuming enough material to have jets.
As far as I understand the current theory behind black hole jets is that it is matter of accretion disk being ejected on magnetic pole due to magnetic field configuration. I can agree that the hole need to be rotating, otherwise it won't produce significant magnetic field around it.
But I don't understand why the hole must be super-massive to produce jets. AFAIK, any black hole consuming matter from accretion disk may produce jets, just with different speeds. So super-massive holes may create jets up to 0.8 light speed (at least thats what Hubble has caught on camera). And smaller holes would produce slower jets.

P.S. Black hole evaporation is technically not the mass escaping from the black hole. It is a half of dual particles spontaneously created on the edge of it, which was lucky enough to have energy/direction to flee away from it. At the same time it takes energy away from the black hole, so due to mass->energy->mass conversion reduces total black hole mass :)
