Did you install CORE to the same directory as HoI? This is not necessarily the default shown by the installer.

I am also having problems installing CORE 0.9. I have a fresh install of WinXP, updated with latest drivers. Installed HoI fresh, tested, rebooted. Then installed 1.06c patch, tested, rebooted. Then when I attempt to install CORE 0.9, I get a windows file protection error saying that files necessary to run Windows have been overwritten by unknown versions and prompting me to insert windows install CD; I also get a failure message stating that CORE got a checksum mismatch and another saying that it could not find the TOC and aborted. I have downloaded the CORE file twice, apparently with no problem, and the file size matches what the site says to expect (32.9MB). Both CORE downloads fail identically when run, even when run from within the HoI folder.

If it is relevant, HoI is NOT installed in the default location on the C: drive, but the CORE installer never gets to the point where it should (I assume) ask me for the destination folder. This is really about to get on my very last nerve.

Anyone have a tip here?

I'm almost 100% positive that this is a result of a bad Windows installation. Especially since you keep getting asked for the Windows CD upon rebooting. I have XP installed, and have no problems running CORE o.9 at all.

You need to delete the CORE directory after installing HoI Platinum. Then install 0.9 to the directory. HoI Platinum uses a different directory set up than the older versions.

As I said, this is a totally fresh Windows installation. Tell me, though, are you running XP with either SP1 or SP2?

I run XP Pro SP2 and installed CORE 0.9 with no problems at all, and I neither have HOI/CORE installed onto the default C: drive nor the default directory path name. I'm with JRaup, I think you have something strange about your Windows install, or you have user access-rights problems.

Are you sure you've got a clean download of CORE 0.9? If you got a checksum error, you might have a bad download.

I had this problem in the past. After some research I located the problem. When you have a SATA disk that you want to use as c drive for windows then you first have to remove (unattach!!!!) every other hard drives!!! then you install windows and after that you can reattach the other non sata hard drives. so it is a sata related problem.

It never gets to the point where it asks to be directed to the install folder.

Aha! I think you may have found it. I do not have any SATA drives, but I DO have a SATA drive controller down on my motherboard. I will experiment with unloading its drivers and/or disabling it from BIOS. Thanks!

Might be possible though that you still have to reformat also...

Gotcha. Will add that to my list of experiment steps if driver and BIOS tinkering fail to produce results. Thanks again!

According to the FAQ you don't need to do this for 0.9, only for 0.85. I assume the 0.9 installer knows to look for the alternate directory.

CORE air transports issue

I own the platinum edition that came with 1.06c & CORE v84. I haven't DL'd any patches or mods.

After playing a couple of games as the Allies in vanilla I figured I'd give Germany a try with CORE. Anyway, I was playing fine untill I researched the tech for basic air transport.

As soon as I get it I go to queue up some, but I was outraged to see that the venerable old Ju-52s are a round 40 IC to build! Since you can buy eight infantry divisions for that price I figured it was a fluke and exited the game.

I restarted the game, and loaded the autosave wich was a couple of months before air transports finished. The research finishes once more, but they're still 40 IC to purchase!

Does anyone know what's going on? I don't want to start over, but 40IC for an air transport is unacceptable. Isotope separation for 40 IC, yes. A freaking plane for 40 IC, no way!

Is this a "feature" of COREv84, and if it is, is there another version where air transports are more afordable?

Thanx for any help.

Nah, that's the cost. I'm playing Italy in CORE .9 right now and they cost 36. I think it has something to do with the number of planes supposed to be in the unit, and that it takes a LOT of planes to transport a whole division of paras and their equipment.

Just guessing though.

All the latest versions of both Vanilla HOI and CORE have roughly comparable prices for transports. The reason for this is that while a regular squadron of aircraft has a complement of about 100 aircraft (with the exception of the CarrierAirGroups in CORE at around 35) a transport"squadron" (IRL it would be more like a FliegerKorps or an AirGroup) needs in the order of 700 to 1000 aircraft to transport a fully equipped para-division, which is their carrying-capacity.

In earlier versions the price of a transportsquadron was similar to a strategic bombing unit but this was deemed unhistoric and led to exploits where people just parahopped from VP to VP. In vanilla HOI as Germany you start out with two transportunits and although they have short range they can still come in very handy. :)

The cost of Air Transports was more than likely increased to not only represent the size of them but also yes to discourage paratroop cheating if you will. In CORE even regular paratroopers take about double the time and triple the IC cost to build over regular vanilla units. It's just to prevent exploiting for the most part.

Yep, in the original HoI you could take over the world with a couple 12-stacks of paratroopers, and do it in 2-3 months total. So lots of players entire build strategy was to crank out a para-army and conquer.

Those free transports must be CORE .9 because I sure didn't get a single one in .84.

While I agree that it is cheesy to parahop arround I believe that the tax shoud have been applied to the paratrooper unit instead of the transport. If you want to curb paratrooper use, then charge 40 IC for the paratrooper. That would remind you to use them as such, and not as leg infantry (Monty anyone?)

Oh well, I guess is time to get gauged because the game can be gamed. Gah, I stopped playing WWII online because the devs answer to any imbalance was to hit things with the nerf stick. It's just sad to see the same philosophy applied here, specialy on the eve of HoI2 :(

Thanks for the quick replies everyone.

The cost of a air transport group makes sense, since it's such a large group of large planes and gliders. I'm surprised you didn't have more of a beef with the nonsense that is the CORE paratrooper model progression; the pre-war brigade is almost as effective in combat as the '40 and '43 division models, which is nonsense. It's only a brigade, with a third of the troops, yet it fights almost as well as a full division. The only attribute that's much different (apart from only needing 4 manpower) is the lower organization...doesn't really represent that it's only got a third of the troops and none of the vehicles of a '43 division.
