Well, just to let people know I'm now back from London. The wiki is back up and running, looks like there was a power cut here (probably my flatmate using the toaster, it sometimes causes a fuse to trip).

Kevin, I've got your email and will look at it tonight.

About v0.6 release like somebody already said I think it will be a couple of weeks before it's released. It's a big release and needs a lot of testing to avoid seeing problems like not having Turkey in the game ;)

Re: CORE and No Time Limit

I am curious about something: I am testing CORE .532 and the No Time Limit 1.2. I set the date in my scenario file to start at 1933 and when I start the game it comes up as January 1, 1933 and then immediately goes to January 1, 1935. Is this a known issue? Did I miss something?

I haven't tried it without CORE installed. To be honest, I have tried setting an early start date at all. I have played 1.05b with the no time mod and ran all the way out to 1953. Just seems weird it would skip two years like that.

Thanks for any help or suggestions!

Smacky

By the way, nice looking mod :)
Did you install NTL before or after C.O.R.E.? The C.O.R.E. releases after 1.05b came out (0.52 & 0.53) include the 1.05b hoi.exe so if you installed NTL patch first it would have been overwritten.

I agree as well, welcome back Steel and welcome back myself.

I have already been trying 0.532, as Germany of course, on hard/aggresive/gimme all.

Some observations;

- SCW was boring and the nationalists run over everything and concluded the war in 3 months, even before I had time to intervene.

- Resources seem more balanced, oil a bit high due to the fact that Germany trades 1 on 1 with it for coal and Germany's own production exceeds the army's needs, especially the first 2 years.
Steel seems a bit high as well, although seemingly difficult to get on the world market, a 3-1 offer is always accepted and takes precedance over ALL 2-1 global offers, so I out-power all world powers in this way. Later in the game (with western-europe fallen to the Wehrmacht) Germany produces about 1.4 times more steel then needed for a 500+ economy, should be more like 0.9 and Germany should depend more on the Swedish ore.

- Japan uses the Marco Polo incident to declare war on nationalist china, but they forget communist china, hence in 1.5 years nat china is completely overrun and annexed and com china is granted military access by Japan, weird:(

- Install Tiso SHOULD give only 100 MP (I think) but it gave some 200, very strange.

- Japan influences the USA too often and with too often too good results, result, now in 1941 the USA is very close to Facist allignment, and I don't even influence them, I am sure that within 6 months, I can get them into the Axis.

- Rest historical, Poland falls in 1 month, nice campaign, they defend Warschau again. Suddenly many naval bombers from UK, Canada and Australia, naval bombers in Poland............

- Denmark falls and the event that Iceland and Greenland are "marine invaded" fires, but more then a month later, giving a sneaky player just about time to transport some 200 units of oil and 100 supplies to Germany, but seems okay.
Norway was much easier this time, maybe because I prepared well. Many naval units lost, quite historical.

- Holland has again this huge army, but their doctrines suck, still you have to have well over 20 divisions to invade them with success, believe me, I tried with less and got kicked out once!
The event "Dutch capital moves" worked in time and no taken resources, HURRAY!!! Same goes for Belgium. Good work guys!

- But now, I move into France, through the "undefended" ardennes, and to my surprise I run into the BEF, commanded by GORT!!! How historical can you get!!! But they are a bit too strong, they repell von Manstein tanks, all 10 of them, I guess I attack over a river, but I have that researched, anyway, von Rundstedt can not follow on quick enough from Arlon, so I am pushed back and have to be "humanly flexible". Because I wait too long (because I can't believe my eyes), I loose all but 1 tank division, most were PZKWI and II's. I order 20 PZKW III 40mm quickly, this destroys the research projects investment.
I swing around from Holland and encircle 16 Belgium divisions in Antwerp, they are destroyed.
But for the rest, I am used to be close to Paris now with minimum losses and no resistance, but now I am just in France and facing huge armies. In a slow and dragging campaign with some close calls, I manage Vichy end of August 1940, who said you need tanks..;)

- Vichy MUCH MUCH CLEANER this time, no wondering French/Belgium/Dutch units that take provinces at all, but is Vichy not a bit too strong with all those divisions, 7 in NA and 15 in France??
I take military control because they defend Vichy with 15 divisions and leave the southern beaches defenseless and the NA beaches as well. I supply with supplies only.

- I ask Italy to join in July, they took their time but agreed. North Africa again is only defended by some Egyptian divisions and these are quickly destroyed when Egypt joins the Allies. The egypt event "ask Britain to send help" is answered by "we will help", but I see NOTHING arriving. Some 6 UK divisions are doing almost nothing to 0 org. Italian troops in Etheopia.
Italy declares war on Albania, but falls to invade it at all.

- FWW lasts till January 1940 by the way, historical outcome.

- Italy declares war on Yugoslavia, just when I am about to ask them into the alliance, can Italy PLEASE PLEASE declare war on Greece and can Albania be annexed by event or just lower those 3 divisions it has and the coastal defenses, the Italian AI can't deal with it.

- I deal with Yugoslavia and I try a new techniek (for me), fast pealing of tank divisions encirlce huge armies and I keep them at bay with tac bombers, hhhmmmm, did I read any Blitzkrieg books........:D

- 1 March 1941 now, I seem very on track with infantry (333 MP left), historical with tanks, although no PZKWIV yet, I need to defeat Greece first.

- Belgograd and Luxembourg (by demand territory, maybe take that German claim on it?) max out all my resources except oil.

Let's see what happens, but it looks interesting so far. I increased the GPW event to include the decrease of supplies needed by the USSR and the upping of some max org for units and have added more days to the decrease of general build time.
They have about 10 divisions on me on the borders.

Great work again guys, looking better all the time!

That did it! I went and redid the NTL mod again on the HOI.exe. I restarted the game and everything is working as it should (from what I can tell).

Tanx!

Welcome back, Steel. By asking about ETA, wasn't meaning to put pressure--we're lucky that the team tests extensively. Rather, consider it a sign of shaking and sweating anticipation/eagerness.

re:Hendriks' notes above

I find Gort's repulse of Manstein's tanks a VERY plausible outcome. Historically, the PzI's and II's of the 7th Panzer had an extremely dicey time getting across the Meuse at Sedan against relatively weak French resistance, let alone determined British. In fact, some would argue (German officers who were present, in my literature) that the entire French campaign could have become unhinged if the 7th had been further stymied at Sedan. I LOVE the fact that HOI models all these alternate possibilities, and especially how CORE makes them possible.

New to C.O.R.E.

Hi to everybody on the C.O.R.E. team,
First of all, I am a long-time player of HOI (since it came out), and more recently became a huge fan of the C.O.R.E. mod.

I would like to thank the C.O.R.E. team, and especially Steel, for all the work and effort put into improving HOI: I think it is totally obvious to everybody who plays the C.O.R.E. mod that these improvements greatly increase the overall fun and enjoyment of the game.

I am a long-time lurker on the C.O.R.E. forum, and follow all the goings-on. I plan to help with the mod just as soon as I am done my research project at work... when I will have enough spare time to contribute (a month or two left).

So, just wanted to introduce myself, say Hello, and I'll talk to you all again soon!

Keep up the awesome work!

JesseJames

I'm dinking around with CORE's unitnames.csv, and some questions occur to me:

1) I notice that some nationalities were completely removed, like Estonia and Czechoslovakia. I assume that was to shrink the file and thus provide a bit more speed, on the reason that countries that tend to get absorbed aren't considered highly crucial to have national unit names. Let's say I wanted to add those back in. Provided I maintained the overall order and delimitation of the file, is there any likely harm from doing so?

2) Are there any upper limits to the size of this file? I doubt I'd add enough stuff to exceed the size of the game's stock file, but it's good to be aware.

3) Any harm in mass removing the asterisks?

4) What's the char limit for a name? It's at least 46, I think, because some of the stock names are that long.

5) Am I the only one who suspects that beginning the name text with an apostrophe causes weirdness? I've noticed that the Hungarian infantry units and some transport fleets never seem to use the latter portion of the names available, and the common factor seems to be starting the text with an apostrophe. If so, that would make some sense; perhaps it's interpreted as a delimiter.

6) Once I get done with it, is the CORE team interested in what I've done? Changes include things like Shan-bing-tuan for Chinese mountain infantry, Chausseurs Alpins for French mountain infantry, and so forth.

Not to worry on stability; I'm definitely keeping a copy of the original unmucked with, so that I can experiment until the cows come home and revert if need be. Even so, obviously, any adverse consequences from my tweaks are my fault and mine alone. Likewise, this is only for my own use (since I am taking your work and modifying it, rather than making my own homegrown version) unless I talk to you in advance and we obtain agreement.

Because i keep geting my butt kicked wither germany every time i get into the war with the USSR, can i ask for some help in this department?

Am i putting too much into research, and not enough into producing units (I try to keep it roughtly the same...).
I alway end up facing well equipped and supported red army troops that seem to appear out of nowhere...a territory will have 3 infantry in it...but as soon sa i reach it....bam, theres 90 units there...

WHen i play as the USSR, i seem to have the exact opposite problem....the wehrmach is in moscow by the end of the year...

can't really ask this in the main fourms, because of the alterations in the way the game is layed out in CORE....like the techtree and so on...

(I have finished it, but only by..*sigh* cheating...when i find i can't defeat a single unit standing on the flat terrian peice, with 12 tanks lead by gudarian..i start hitting that even 1013 alot....)

Vienna Diktat

I just played a game and the Vienna Diktat fired. Both Hungary and Romania were Axis and the Axis was fighting Allies only, not Russia.

Hungary pressed for Romanian lands.

Romania refused and left the Axis.

A couple of days later, Romania REJOINED.

Kinda destroyed the point... anyone else see this?

ALSO

What I hate about Anschluss is that Austria can choose to remain independent but Germany still gets claims and can annex by Austria ceding the provinces

Is there any way for HOI or CORE to fix that in every game?

Because i keep geting my butt kicked wither germany every time i get into the war with the USSR, can i ask for some help in this department?

Strange, I never had this problem but I have not played 0.532 to the end yet, I am a few months before the outbreak of the war with Russia.
Important are enough infantry divisions, basically with the infantry tech researched until advanced and don't forget to upgrade your infantry divisions. Solely tank divisions do not make it, are expensive to maintain (especially when you get Partisan tech) and take a long time to build if you loose any, I would say 20 tank divisions of PZKWIII 40mm and PZKWIV on the way and make sure you have up to at least 250 infantry divisions in total. Some 50+ to defend your conquered lands and at least 200 to move into the USSR, and having some mobiele reserves are very very handy, especially when you run into a prolonged eastern campaign.

Destroy and encircle your way to Moscow, Leningrad and Stalingrad. Let your allies by themselves, don't take military control, this is not fun.

CORE has done a great job to increase the difficulty Germany historically faced in the east, I think they are or have adjusted the weather effects as well and brought the speeds down and the USSR gets Great Patriotic War when Germany declares war and this greatly decreases build time for russian infantry and tanks and mechs, and I have not seen the new land-lease support events, but they should eliminate the resource problems of the russians. In this way, an historical way is followed that if you can't defeat the USSR in the summer of 42, you will NOT defeat it because of lack of manpower.
