may 1942. Germany (me) surrenders to the soviet onslaught! they pushed me back to berlin while performing some nice encirclements till i caved in. tech wise they were so far ahead further resistance was futile.
it the first time ive lost to russia so im well impressed but i have to say i was playing semi historical for eg

- i vastly increased the kriegsmarine, building some 60 ships. )not really needed in HOI which is a shame)
- i was researching subs and naval doctrine. (same as above, even bigger shame)
- invaded yugoslavia but not other unhitorical countries. used them as allies.

all that research and ships could have been spent improving the army and more divisions so i reckon the next game will be the real test.
will probably start it on saturday.

Great work

Hi,

I'm playing the latest Core mod, and I have to say :

Great job !!!!!

The tech tree is very realistic ; the upgrades for units are logical (need for refit, modernize and reorganize units is accurate) ; the speed and supplies modifiers welcome.

I was very surprised as Germany when my units were smashed by Polish and even (shame on me:p ) by Netherland. It took me 3 monthes to conquer Poland (and it costed the lives of my two paratroopers divisions...)

The French AI crossed the Rhine (first time in more than 15 games !) and seized two german provinces before being cut and crushed.

The UK AI made a spectacular landing in Rostock en 1939, but the landing units failed to exploit the surprise, and were crushed some weeks later on the same beach.

The AI French and UK navies are blockading my ports.

But some Australian naval bombers try every week to strat-bomb Germany and are slaughtered...

The diplomacy is very (too ?) easy, as Portugal, Hungary (in Axis), Italy,Spain are fascists (Nationalists won), and Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Persia are autocrats 100% fascists-oriented.

I'm now preparing the assault on Belgium (neutral) and France. But i'll be very careful !

Again : great job !!

Soviet Officer Purge

Ok, I am playing my first game as USSR, v1.05, CORE v0.05, and I had the option to purge my officer corps as Stalin did histroically. I decided to let them live, and take a heavy dissent hit of 10%. No problem, its worth it.

The even has now come up 3 times and my dissent is at 29%. Is it going to keep coming up until I finally decide to purge? This is insane, there would never have been this much dissent. If in the real purge half of the 70-80,000 officers were killed (approx. 35,000 people), then how does that make up for 30% of the people in the country going against the government. In reality, 35,000 people might amount to a 1-2% dissent hit.

Is this event going to be fixed? Please dont tell me its WAD.

I guess it's a WAD. The USSR should be a high-dissent country. A huge number of people thrown to GULags (approximately 20 millions in 1941) were a big dissent hit as well. We can't make any 'eathnic cleasing-style' events, but what we can do is give the dissent by other means.

Reassuming, it's not about those 30 generals, they were just the top of an iceberg. The dissent should stay.
Cheers

There are four purge events, they won't keep re-occuring after the last one. And that seems reasonable to me. From Stalin's point of view, there was a serious threat to his authority from the officer corps. Whether or not that threat was real is open to question, but the player should expect to have some significant repercussions if he doesn't take the historical path. If you keep them alive, you'll have to assume that they'll be plotting against you, so there's going to be a big expenditure necessary to keep an eye on them and make sure the rest of the population stays loyal to you. Assume the spending you'll have to divert to keep dissent down is going into the KGB budget.

Besides, the Red Army has a ton of officers. Plenty of replacements available for the purged ones. ;)

Ming, I suspect the only way to resolve this would be to not use mod-dir at all. This goes strongly against the wishes of many players who want C.O.R.E. to leave original files alone. To resolve this I would need to create an alternate installer for those who play MP. Let me see how much work it is and I'll post back here tonight or tomorrow, just be aware I will not have time to test it extensively.

DeathwisH, there's 4 purge events so just one more for you. IIRC you can clear 0.1% of dissent per day so 10% hit means 100 days to fully clear the effects for each event, effectively this is a total of just over 1 years lost production (although you can make IC upgrades etc during that time).

I can see where you are coming from, but tell me: if the penalty was 1% (cleared in 10 days) for the ahistorical option, then would you ever pick the historical option and lose leaders and manpower?

I never meant to actually impose a 1% dissent hit, I was just trying to show the difference between reality, and what was happening in game. I agree that there must be some reason to follow the historical path, I was just worried that I would be getting an indefinate amount of purge events. I guess 40% dissent is reasonable considering the amount of skill I am saving.

EDIT:
Also, in real life, was there actually any notable disloyalty in the officer corps? Or was it just Stalin's raging paranoia.

See the 'Benes warns Stalin' event. Apparently Marshal Tukhachevsky, while drunk, made some indiscreet comments about Stalin to this counterparts in Prague, who informed Uncle Joe. There was likely something afoot, but how successful it might have been is open to question - Stalin did such an efficient job of liquidating all the possible participants that it's difficult to get an exact picture of who really was a threat to him.

Hey Zakouski, thanks for the feedback :D We are certainly aware of the strength of Axis diplomacy and have been discussing some solutions but as you say because of the government type it is hard to solve this. Watch this space though, perhaps in the next version we will crack this problem :)

The last I saw, you were looking at reducing the German Diplomatic points. Any success with that approach? If not, I'd be willing to take a shot at writing a few events that would push the countries that have the biggest game-balance implications (Spain, Turkey, Argentina, Portugal) back onto a more historical path.
