After 2.0 what direction are we going to take?

Hi again!

I have been away from HoI due to me being involved with the Matrix Games and their creation of "War in the Pacific", but I can now provide some more time to HoI C.O.R.E.

The question that I have is that after 2.0 what do we need to focus on for CORE? I was looking at the Tag ID etc. thread and it looks like most regions have a significantly high number of events, barring a few (notably South East Asia).

Is there any area that you will need my help on for additional events, for balancing, for historic consistency? Or, will we have a better understanding of direction after 2.0 is released?

Thanks!

I asked about Shep's tech mod in my previous post. I dunno what Shep is doing at the moment(anyone know?), but there are some very good ideas in his mod and then again I think it is a bit too extensive. No offense Shep! As Generalissimo pointed out that there is more testing to be done if the tech mod is to be included in next version. So I suggest that you start testing the tech mod if its ok with you. :)

Well there's been quite a lot of work done on the tech tree AFAIK, check the two threads on the subject :D

About what direction C.O.R.E. will take, I think almost all the events we have are 1936-1943 with a sharp drop for 1944-1948 (pretty much to zero ;) ) so the next logical step would be too look at late-war events.

AI still needs much work, I think the 0.2 AI will be largely the same as in 0.1 :( so that needs to be a priority. Balancing will be especially important here, we will very likely need to tweak a lot of events and review starting OOBs to get the game closer to historical results.

One big project would be developing real "campaign AI files" for all the majors at least. This may sound simple but it is a bit of a nightmare IMHO :(

There's also countries to be added (Korea etc) which takes a lot of work (researching cabinets and OOBs) and the entire post-Axis world of Allies vs Comintern conflict has been almost entirely ignored.

We had some serious problems with game CTD'ing after instalation of the mod, so serious debugging took place - for now techmod is delayed.
I'm going to post first test version on web in the next week, but I don't want to delay CORE 0.2 - it's high time to release something (2 months from first version)! :)

So, there probably would be 0.25 release - 0.2 with new tech tree.

For 0.3 I would suggest focusing on:

1) Post war and 1944-1953 periods (with suitable new HoI.exe file and modification of scenario file).

2) some (or lots) of "flavor" events (no effect, just info about important cultural/sport/social event), post war... It would be hard, but not impossible.

3) South America events from Fed mod - in fact, those could be added in 0.2, but I would prfer no further delays.

4) Balancing, balancing, balancing...

5) Sprites. I really like some of the sprites posted on the Nighty site.

I absolutelly agree in all points.

About sprites, yes! it would be great. I have been following closely the development of new sprites, and been testing every single one that´s been released and helping with debugging. Right now i have a cute selection of the best sprites that i use in my games. I think this selection could be included in further CORE releases, if the authors agree, of course!:)

About AI, yes, it would be fine to make better AI not just to make it better, but also more historical yet not predictable. But that is VERY VERY hard. I´ve never worked in AI, but i´m interested on it and i started to read and learn how it works, and uff! it´s very complex to make a good and flexible AI.

I would also consider to rework some previous events. I mentioned it in a previous post. There are some events with very 'betaish' descriptions, just a line or two. Most of those events are based in historical facts, so i think that a deeper desc is needed. One-line desc are ok for a first version of the mod, but they give a impression of unfinished work. If i get the approval of the authors i could rework some of those event desc, althoug english is not my natural language and surely a english speaking person would make better quality (in literature and gramatic terms;) ) descriptions.

Since you're from Spain, you could translate event messages into spanish? That way we can have both spanish version of C.O.R.E and better event messages for the regular english version.

1) of course we need to add more thing like that to allow better playability in those late stages of the game.

2) well, no problem with that, but they MUST remain in "low priority". it is more important to add events "with effects" rather than "flavor" events ;)

3) Well, N!ghty already has problems with The Federalist because of using their events, so N!ghty decided to remove all Fed's work because of that (Fed & Extro complained about N!ghty using their events in his mod). I haven't seen his events, but BEFORE even trying to add them, we MUST speak with The Federalist.

4) of course...

5) well the authors must allow us to include them in the mod... but, just to let you know, CORE 0.2 is almost 2Mb, so adding the sprites could make the file even larger...

cheers.

Wait to see finished techmod - MDow changed whole graphics in naval tree, so with new pictures for weapons in artillery, infantry, tanks and planes that will make over 2 extra MB. :D

Hi!

Shep's tankmod will be included in the next Stony Road, or better said there will be a version with and without! This will give the tankmod the very much needed feedback, and it will sure soon become much riper in terms of game balance

Meanwhile Fed has granted me his Ok to use his events, so they will be included in the next version. I think you could use them too as Fed sounded to exhausted to again adapt his Total War to 1.04 and then 1.05 etc...

Ouch... But some of them, especially naval ones looks really cool - I would have to review which one are most suitable for CORE techmod.

Nevermind, on USSR Forum General announced, that he is not going to add new events to 0.2, since it would be released soon! :D

Would it be a better idea if the tech tree and new sprites be offered as a seperate download of CORE? Between new sprites and new tech tree images, it will be a large file to download. By seperating the two we could kill two birds with one stone. The Main heart of CORE would be the historical events and the ballanced OOBs, and then there would be the tech trees and improvements like that for military accuracy. There might be a set of players out there that would prefer keeping the units and such more simple (heaven forbid  ) but like the historical accuracy of the events. Just a thought. MDow

that's a problem, because if we modify the starting OOB's based on the new techmod (tanquetes and that stuff...) the people that only has the events will not be able to play CORE until they download the tech mod.... ;)

C.O.R.E. beta 0.1 was written for 1.03b. While it should work with 1.04 it's not really optimised for it and you may not get all the benefits.

I would suggest you hold off until beta 0.2 is released, this takes new 1.04 functionality into play and should work better. It will be out soon :D

Event 372002, South Africa Neutral, has a B choice of SA leaving the Allies. However they still grant and receive military access with the Allied countries and also remain completely in the Democratic corner of the triangle (making it easy for UK to bring them back in). I would suggest the event should be modified to make SA centrist and revoke all MA treaties.
