Not the Hauteville's fault they were behind with their communication protocols. Really, occupying Tortuga should be regarded as friendly lesson by civic neighbours. But if they will be rude and moan all the time, well, perhaps they are in need of further education.

I wouldn't call occupying. No-one to occupy it from, after all. Rather, a colonization in good faith, not knowing that the Uriy had claimed the system to themselves. After that, expenses have been made, people have been moved, since the colonization ship is unable to fly no more and is dismantled already, getting the population away from there is next to impossible and in the end, it's a free space. Normans just got here first.

As for further education- since space ports were redesigned to take proper punishment, then further education has to wait until i get some destroyers. Don't want the Normans to fly like lemmings to the disaster. With Paradox would do the same for defense stations too.

I approve of the background for the pirates. Do pirates of other species attack in Stellaris?

Than you for your approval. :) And unfortunately, no. There are now some independent pirate fleets in Stellaris, but they are without species. So, i'm counting them as multi-species pirate clans. They don't attack though. More like different kind of space monsters, waiting to be destroyed and being totally passive.

Nice backstory over the pirates. My main annoyance with them is that they will always happen, no matter how you build your race. Them vanishing forever once you beat them is also strange.

At least it gives you a challenge to write a different backstory every time. Last time, military hijackers; this time, space pirates. :p
But agreed, as a mandatory combat tutorial, they get old soon. Especially since there is no follow-up.

Thanks! Fixed now, i hope :)

Indeed it seems to be. Thanks!

Tuscany

“Magnificent,” whispered Emma and leaned on a window.

Outside, the docking clamps of O’Hare were cut loose and the engines of a huge ships ignited. Slowly, at a crawling speed, the ship steered clear of the docks. The observation deck and ship’s windows were filled with people, trying to get a last glimpse of the Earth or to see someone they’ve left behind at the space station. There was smiling and waving and an occasional tear. Some of them noticed the Empress and gave sort of informal salute to her, and Emma waved back, smiling.

O'hare, setting off

Then, the lumbering beast stopped outside. Engaged her side thrusters and set a correct course towards Tokugawa station. The main thrusters engaged again, this time with more intensive flare and the ship started to accelerate. Soon, you could not distinguish people. Then, as the ship made it´s distance, you could see three corvettes from Hauteville Fleet coming in, matching speed and taking up escort positions. Bit more time later, the ship seemed small and escorts looked like specks. Then, you could only see the light of thrusters. Then, even that became indistinguishable from the bright stars, until they disappeared. O’Hare was well within her way towards the edge of the Solar System.

The journey would be a long and boring. There was little need for navigation, apart from occasional slight course correction. Most of it would be acceleration and then, decceleration when arriving to their destination. Then, a jump and the same process over again. All of it would take about 4 month, and then, they’d be home. In their new home.

“Such a waste,” commented Carla Salazar, the Prime Minister of the Empire, currently leaning next to Emma.

Emma gave her a questioning look.

“That her maiden voyage is also her last,” Carla sighed. “Plus, with all the resources we put on building this beauty- only to be dismantled by the end of the year.”

“This is the most efficient,” Emma started talking, only to be cut off by Carla

“Yes, I know, I’ve seen the calculations as well,” she made her voice mockingly official “By using the ship not only as a means of transportation, but making the ship itself necessary goods for the fledgling colony, is the most efficient way of colonizing new worlds. Currently, the Empire has achieved 94,3% recyclability of the ship’s components towards equipping the new colony, from power plants to hulls to toilet in the captain’s cabin.”

“Oh. Didn’t know the last part. What happens to the toilet in the captain’s cabin?” asked Emma

“Becomes a toilet in governor’s house. Just as captain becomes governor,” replied Carla.

Emma chuckled. “So, the captain is recycled as well.”

“And i’ve seen the other proposals. You need ship big enough to fit O’Hare to her cargo bays. Apart from costs, you also need it to be able to take off from the planet after colonization. Original calculations put it the size of the sole planet, and it wasn’t abandoned because of the cost. It was abandoned that landing that beast would throw most of the planets off their orbit. Most of it were engines. Or, if you plan to put a ship on orbit, then the ship needs to hold hundreds of shuttles to get all things down and the fuel for them shuttles. Again, the size...”

“I know,” Emma. “And I agree, it’s a shame we have to cut her apart”

Carla nodded. “Just other options are much worse.”

Emma sighed, “Plus, to create a permanent colonizing ship, you’d need something else we are sorely lacking as well.”

“Colonizable planets?” inquired Carla

“Yes. Apart from Alpha Centauri, there are most likely few in the Uriy space, but apart from military incursion, we have no way of getting there,” replied Emma. “And the other planets around, well, aren’t nice. If you happen to be human, at least.”

The situation doesn't look too promising

“So,” said Carla, “We have a serious issue. Somehow, i don’t see Hauteville Empire settling with just three planets”

“Agreed,” nodded Emma, “But the good news is, we also have a solution. Or rather, a hope. Or even a plan with hope”

“?” was Carla’s reaction

“I was thinking of proposing that in the next cabinet meeting,” replied Emma, “But to me, the solution is obvious. We need to keep on surveying. I’m thinking of construction of new wormhole stations to the systems within our range. And after that, sending a corvette on initial survey run. They’ll pick up some new colonizable worlds for sure.” She paused for a moment, then added: “I hope”

“Well,” said Carla, thoughtfully. “It’s either that or we start modifying humans to be able to live in such extreme conditions. And we have no clue how... So, you’ll have my support. We will have to expand soon.”

Emma nodded. They continued to watch in silence as O’Hare put up distance between her old and new home.

Planetfall

Manfredo Hauteville-Sforza, brand new Star King of Tuscany, didn’t know anything about this conversation. And even if he did, he wouldn't have cared. He sat on the observation deck of O’Hare and watched as his old home diminished to nothing. Then, he went and looked for his captain-to-be-recycled-as-governor and went over the plans once again.

Tuscany, the biggest habitable planet known to humans, and it’s near perfect Earth-like conditions, would make more then a fitting third planet for the Hauteville Empire. And if things go according to Manfredo’s plan, the Nuovo Firenze, future capital of Tuscany and incidentally, a landing site for O’Hare, would become a center of industry, commerce and culture to all of the Hauteville Empire.

Until then, there is much to be done. But Manfredo was sure that he will rise up to the challenge. Well, he, the governor and the elected prime minister, forming a sort of triumvirate in ruling the planet. Wise, for one man can get funny ideas, but three men, not likely.

It was a long journey, and totally uneventful. It begun in May 2208 and the planetfall happened in September 2208, just when spring was arriving to Tuscany. Arable land, waiting for Earth-based seeds. Warm sun. Clear water of the Arno River. Tuscany got a real good start.

Arrival in Tuscany, Sirius System

This is fillerish episode, telling about expansion options and well, about colonizing Tuscany. Something more meaty the next time. :)

Indeed it seems to be. Thanks!

Rather, thanks for telling me! :)

What can i say but "glad to have you on board" :)

Another colony! I sure hope you run into one of those colonization events, otherwise it wouldn't be that much fun.

Three colonies are great! ...as a start. Emma is right, we need more surveying. And, perhaps, an enlargement of the imperial navy? So that we can do incursions into....otherwise closed space?

For the present, things are going fine. But long-term... you definitely need to find more planets for humans to live on.

Three worlds seems like a good beginning. An auspicious number, maybe. More more would be better.

Liked the joke about the toilet in the captain's cabin.

Unfortunately, no. But hey, spreading your influence is also fun! You just go quantity, not quality.

Exactly, as a start. As for incursions into otherwise closed spaces. Well, i tried in my other game something i've done several times pre-Heinlein. Gathered a fleet of corvettes, little above 1k in power and watched in horror as the enemy space port tore it to little pieces. Need destroyers with M guns to clear.

For the present, things are going fine. But long-term... you definitely need to find more planets for humans to live on.

Yep, but the long-term is about 5 years or so, when Alpha gets colonized and i have nowhere to expand. So, the future is now.

Three worlds seems like a good beginning. An auspicious number, maybe. More more would be better.

Liked the joke about the toilet in the captain's cabin.

Hehh, 300 would be much more auspiciious! But let's not get ahead of ourselves now. And thanks!

Did you make this galaxy when the continental world generation bug was still there? If so, the Normans need terraforming, or else expansion might come to a screeching halt.

Continental world generation bug? Please, tell me more. I've played ahead and found a whopping 2 continentals (plus, some of the planets generated for species), but i always thought this was just my bad luck?

Yes, there was a bad bug in 1.3 and I think 1.3.1 that caused continental, savannah, and alpine world weight to be very badly skewed for some reason. There could be like only 10 continental worlds in an entire galaxy in some cases.

Living Ships

Mother Lode

It was in 2208 when Hauteville Empire commissioned another science ship, partially from minerals robbed from pirates. She was called Clostermann and she was identical to Asimov. Kabir Pannikar as appointed as the Captain / Chief Scientist of Clostermann. Well-deserved promotion too. He started back in 2200 as one of the scientists in Asimov’s crew. His diligence, his intelligence and his ability to go through the data quickly made him an invaluable asset. Soon, he rose ranks until he became second-in-command of Asimov. Mmaabo was not really happy to see him go, but that’s life- Kabir was well-deserving his post.

Clostermann, the second science ship of the Empire

At the same time, Jiao Hauteville-Yang replaced Sally Lynch as head of society research. Her genius made it obvious- she would be perfect for going through all the variety of societal research, from colonization to genes to governmental issues to agriculture. She was just this smart.

New head of Society. Two geniuses and one half-genius. Not bad.

First assignment of Clostermann was to survey Aesir System. It was near Tortuga system, well within Hauteville borders and contained a lot of planets- so hopefully, there would be something valuable to Normans. Indeed, there was. Kabir identified one mineral lode and one good spot that would be perfect for extrasolar engineering tests. Good, but nothing fancy. Unil Clostermann arrived at Aesir IIIa, a small toxic moon orbiting a barren world. Nothing special about the planet, but the moon...

What Kabir found there was beyond something anyone had dreamed of. Planet so rich with minerals that it was unbelievable. So much resources, and yet, totally unuseable for the Empire. But Kabir wasn’t willing to give up yet. He thought and came up with solution- positron bombardment. If you bombard the planet with positrons, the minerals inside the planet’s crust could be exploited. It was really expensive though- 100 energy credits would have to be spent.

Valuables in the Aesir IIIa

At first, Carla Salazar was doubtful. It was half of the reserve the Hauteville Empire had and the colonization of Tuscany meant that the balance is negative. Not by much, but still negative. But there is little something called greed. In the end, she agreed to it. Mostly because the Hauteville Empire needed minerals. Badly. And she was willing to take a gamble to gain more.

What the crew of Closterman achieved was something special though. The positron bombardment of Aesir IIIa, was a success. Currently, Hauteville Empire was making 35 minerals per month. And the mineral node in Aesir IIIa would add another 9 to the pool. Meaning, one little discovery and one small, though very expensive, orbital bombardment later and the resources available to the Empire have grown nearly a quarter. Well, there is still a question of building the mining base, but naturally, this became a priority job.

... and we've stuck mother lode

The maiden voyage of Clostermann was the most fruitful the Empire had had yet.

Living Ships

“What do you mean by the “ship is alive”?” Isabel Hauteville-Lopez, head of engineering department, was raising her voice. Unintentionally.

“Was alive,” Mmaabo corrected her automatically.

“Seriously? A living, breathing spaceship? Is that even possible?”

“I’m not sure about the breathing part,” said Mmaabo. She gazed around the conference table. The only real persons there were part of the crew of Asimov, but the holographic images of everyone else also sat besides the table and appeared to be, well, mostly shocked. All three heads of science departments, Empress Emma with Bohemond hovering occasionally over her shoulder and Prime Minister Carla Salazar.

Asimov was surveying Hozint system, just a little outside the borders of the Hauteville Empire. In December 2208, they were surveying the molten world of Hozinth II, when something caught her eye. Mountain formation that shouldn’t be there. It seemed unnatural. So, the Asimov took a closer look.

Finding the irregularities

By March 2209, it was clear that this was not a mountain. It was a skeleton. Of an alien. Now, just imagine how big the skeleton has to be to be mixed up with a mountain. So, it was a bloody huge skeleton.

Discovering that something is amiss

It was then the bodiless head of Bohemond appeared above Emma again and put in, “All that aside, are you absolutely sure about the dating?”

“Believe me, when i first got the results, i did run another test. And another. And another. And then 10 more. And then, told everyone else to run independent tests. And then, sent several boxes of samples back home on fast courier. All came up with the same result.” Mmaabo explained, patiently and looking a bit annoyed. Like she had already done the explaining a few hundred times as well. Well, naturally, she had explained it a few hundred times. And she knew full well that there would be a few thousand more.

“Yes, but 3,4 billion years?” Emma put in. Of course, she saw the initial report, but still, the number alone...

“We were a bloody primordial soup back then,” added Bohemond, “And you are telling me that there was a race back then who had bloody ships that were alive?”

Mmaabo nodded: “Yes, this is exactly what i’m telling you.”

The discovery that instead of mountain was a skeleton, warranted yet another and more thorough study of the skeleton that lasted from March to September. It was around July when Mmaabo started to get a sneaking feeling that it was a ship. In the beginning, she ditched the idea as crazy, but it kept coming back to her head, and each time, with more certainty. The looks of the skeleton resembled ship. There was something that could have been thrusters. There were weapons emplacements, most likely energy weapons. And the ample room inside the skeleton was apparently crew quarters, and some cargo holds and such. Most likely.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence and she kept the best part of August and September combing the skeleton for more evidence. Until she could, with certainty, say that indeed, this skeleton was a spaceship once. Now, we get the to the meeting. She was presenting the evidence until Isabel interrupted her.

Discovering the truth

“Can we replicate the technology?” Carla asked.

Jiao Hauteville-Sheng, head of society and Isabel told “No” in almost perfect unison. Followed by “There is too little left of the skeleton to really know how it was built,” “Or grown,” “Our technology isn’t up to the task yet,” “This would mean altering the genes in a way we can’t even dream of,” and so on and so on. It ended in perfect unison again, “But we would really love to research it closer. We need a science station above the planet. As soon as possible.”

“Is there a chance they will come back?” Emma interrupted the confused scientists.

“Who?” asked Mmaabo.

“The ones who built this ship. Or rather, their friends?” the Empress clarified.

“Gods.” Mmaabo struck silent for a while. “I hope not,” she added after a while, in a hushed tone.

This episode is dedicated to our brave explorers, going where no Norman has gone before. And, talk about great success. First run of Clostermann hits an amazing amount of minerals and Asimov finds a living ship. Well, remains of a living ship. Meaning that the ship is actually dead now. Dead ship, that should have been the title.

This episode shows the state of the empire and its colonisation plans, so it lays ground for others. :)

Not much to lay ground on. Yet.

Yes, there was a bad bug in 1.3 and I think 1.3.1 that caused continental, savannah, and alpine world weight to be very badly skewed for some reason. There could be like only 10 continental worlds in an entire galaxy in some cases.

Heh, that would explain the very sad number of continental worlds around. But what the hell, i'm up for the challenge. Let's see how this bad little bug changes the gameplay.

Come back? Or are they already among the stars? Fallen Empires, anyone? :p

I had that thought as well. Perhaps a challenge for our good Normans lurks in the Dark.
