So he must be playing as a Merchant Republic himself? Otherwise he'd be getting wrong-type holding penalties on those cities right? Or do other religions/groups not have wrong type holding penalties?
Two specific cases. Muslims have a special variant of feudalism called iqta (RL version) that allows nobles to freely hold temples, and merchant republic burghers can apparently hold castles.

Yes, that was a merchant republic game and the income was from regular buildings + high stewardship + steward collecting taxes.

No, you should write it coherently.
Depending on your location on the map raiding adventurers may become extremely annoying due the shattered retreat. I'm not referring raiding parties or hosts with claims but random adventurer hosts with relatively sizable armies who raid you for apparently no reason. After you beat them they retreat and come back, sometimes with an army bigger than the one they had before the battle (wtf!?).

Sometimes I had 4-5 of these raiding me simultaneously (and that's not counting the regular Norse raiders).

Shattered retreat seems to need some rebalancing.

Honestly as much as I agree with you I think your not even focusing on what makes adventurers truly ridiculous.

What truly makes them ridiculous is the fact that they exist in a world where developers also claim that the player and the AI play by the same rules.

Excuse me?

My levies (on which my survival depends) are dependent and governed by how many opinions, laws, vassals, number of holdings in the realm, etc.

And this guy over here can just magically poof 15 - 20k guys out of his ass. No holdings, no vassals to worry about? Just 20k guys sitting around doing nothing in every province waiting for something to do.

And then they're going to stand there and tell us the player and the AI play by the same rules?

Mmk.

There are plenty of ways for a player to poof troops into existence. Retinues, for one, not to mention raiding parties raised by pagan rulers from thin air.

Right its a system I pay for them, they cost a lot initially and I have to wait for them to form up, AND they lower your income because of their continual upkeep.

What does the adventurer pay initially? Nothing as far as I know. Because oh right hes a landless wizard nobody.
What does the adventurer pay in upkeep? Nothing as far as I know, but i'm not as sure on this one.
And sure enough he doesn't even have to wait all 15 - 20k troops are there ready and willing to go.

Yes as a pagan I can get what, 500 - 1000 raiders and hope they have the patience to actually get out of the country before disbanding in anger.

A better example would be those starts like Halfdan 867, Karen, that one guy in India, starts that start the player with 5 or 10k plus troops. But even then is it really comparable? A one time troop giveaway compared to an AI that routinely and frequently pulls 20k troops out of its ass, no repercussions, no laws, no source.

Yea we're totally playing by the same rules.

I have to admit to not having done it recently, but by using "prepare for invasion" I've had some fairly large (free) forces. I've also had prepared invasions declared on me that have gone nowhere, presumably because the preparation didn't give enough troops to do anything useful.

I get your point OP...But just like the catholic church has the papal infallibility as dogma, so do these forums hold the developers infallible. So criticizing them will earn a lot of "respectful" disagreeing,and most members turning against you even if you make a valid point (about which they could even agree later on)
So next time you should try sugarcoating it a bit,make the whole thing look like a happy accident rather then a mistake.

I have to admit to not having done it recently, but by using "prepare for invasion" I've had some fairly large (free) forces. I've also had prepared invasions declared on me that have gone nowhere, presumably because the preparation didn't give enough troops to do anything useful.
Yeah, but there the players and AI are playing by the same rules. Either the prepared invasion goes like it's supposed to and launches with a big lump of magic troops, or it gets ignored and disbands and the ruler loses the CB for life and a huge chunk of prestige, or the ruler has a heart attack and the heir doesn't inherit the invasion. Whereas Falki's Host or whoever acts like a realm unto itself with a full line of succession and multiple thousands of troops that they can use anywhere, any time, and which reinforce by the hundreds in enemy territory for no apparent monetary cost (whereas player levies don't reinforce in enemy territory and retinues cost money), and have no land you can declare war on to eliminate it altogether. Players can never reinforce that fast without marching all the way home, disbanding, and re-raising. And when they're not trying to conquer people they behave like the usual bloody annoying Norse raiders, except with multiple thousands of troops that can sack highly upgraded castles with ease.

"Bob's Host" hasn't come raiding me, and the only ones I've seen attacking me (or someone near me) got squashed, fled, and never returned, so I haven't seen them reinforcing heavily.

I must have just not run into them in that aspect.

I wonder if they're some sort of super retinue, and the AI *is* paying for them after creation with any money the character has managed to obtain. Perhaps there's something in the files somewhere. I don't know where to look to dig it out.
