Of course, I know you're all good, dignified people and that absolutely all of you will continue to unlock Saga in Stone in the way the gods intended. :) Manually. The Crow will be watching if you don't.
The way the gods intended it: by becoming a Duke, accumulating 5,000 gold pieces, starting a war against a vassal, surrendering so that you abdicate, ascending to Duke as your only heir, and repeating so that the cooldown resets each time.

IMO arguments against this (very welcome) change would have made sense to me if CK3 was not as stringent as it is with which mods disable achievements. It's not even like other PDX games I've played, such as Stellaris, where you can at least mod the UI and use various QoL and visual tweaks and still earn achievements. I don't quite know why CK3 is different in this regard but you can barely do anything in CK3 without disabling achievements.

Like, guys, I just want some new art. Or new icons. Or hats, I like hats. It makes no sense to make us have to choose between that and achievements, and if discerning mods like that from gameplay altering ones is too much work then, well... even assuming they ever actually mattered in the first place (debatable), it's better to go with a blanket "allow all mods" than a blanket ban.
You have expressed my opinion exactly. Well, cheaters will cheat. They will know that they haven't really achieved anything with their own skills. If it doesn't bother them, I don't care. Besides, anyone who wants to specifically just get an achievement can already get some achievements very easily if they start as a custom character or some specific historical character. The best example is the achievement The True Royal Court. As the wiki instructs: "Start as Qocho in the 867 start date and swear fealty to the Kirghiz Khanate, unpause to instantly unlock the achievement." Great. That's basically the same as if someone had achieved it by cheat.
Plus, this decision has one big upside for the developers as well. For a lot of things that players are asking for, the developers have written that they won't be working on that, and if someone wants something like that, they can use mods. This way everyone can improve the game with mods without making it impossible to get achievements, and thus there could be less criticism for the developers. As for me, for example, I know that if it's possible to mod out some terrible events (for the developers, I know, all events are awesome and you love them) and still get achievements, there will be significantly less of my criticism of the quality of the events (it won't disappear completely, but there will be less of it).

A lot of the arguments against this change (and the same change in V3) seem to assume that cheating is gonna be rampant. But we have evidence from other games that that’s simply not the case.

XCOM 2 has a mod on the steam workshop which will immediately unlock all (base game) achievements. It has been there for 7 years. Yet there’s still a base game achievement with only 0.8% completion. Clearly, very few people are using that mod (or otherwise cheating that achievement).

Victoria 3 has fully cheatable achievements allowing mods and non-ironman, just like this change in CK3. Yet there’s still an achievement with 0.7% completion.

The truth is that there’s no reason to believe that everyone and their mother will suddenly start cheating achievements more than they were before. Most people either don’t care about accumulating achievements or want to actually do them, not use tools to render them pointless. The most common form of achievement "cheating" is gonna be savescumming, which was already not hard to do and was probably already the most common form of achievement cheating.

I don’t see why you’d care about other people cheating achievements except if it ruins the completion percentage tracker. But there’s plenty of evidence from other games that it doesn’t ruin the completion percentage tracker, so there shouldn’t be anything to worry about (in fact, it might make it better because you’ll have a more realistic spread of percentage instead of almost everything being under 10%).

Personally I’m hoping this lets achievements be earned in MP, will be neat to go for achievements in a more challenging environment.

Achievements without Ironman and/or with mods doesn’t really bother me anyway, they are personal milestones and aren’t even indicative of skill anyway. Let players get them how they want (but please make MP possible?!)

I will confirm that. It was decided to not mention it in the DD, so it wouldn't overshadow the discussion on the fantastic work the art department has put in, so if you're going to discuss it: keep it in this thread :) The spicy thing is you can get achievements without ironman, and you can get them while running mods. There are some conditions that will disable it, but you can look at those in the patch notes when they come.

While it means you can make mods that instantly unlocks the achievements, the Crow of Judgement will be gazing upon cheaters. Somewhere, somehow, there will be a Crow of Judgement looking at you.
Finally! I do not need to die on the hill! Thank you so much for this team, I can now finally use mods without having the FOMO demon breathing down my neck :D

I'll still ironman it for the achievements because its fun doing it that way - if others don't it doesn't worry me at all.

But at least this way I can get around the still broken Warrior Queens cultural tradition for my Makuria run for the DLC.

You are presenting this information like it is somehow a good thing. Why have achievements at all then, if you can just cheat and give them to yourself?
Every time we have this argument, the pro-restriction side act like Steam Achievement Manager doesn't exist.

Why is that?

If it works the way it does in Victoria 3 (which I assume it does), then achievements can only be earned in single-player.

Just want to chime in here, coming from Vicky 3 something about this change that some people might not be aware of is that it should allow mods to create their own achievements (without having to create a totally separate system).
You can have EK or AGOT with their own sets of achievements specific to their setting for example.
