Given the unfortunate loss of my old Munster AAR ( :( ) I am looking to make another crack at things, and I'm hoping I can get some ideas.

For preference it should be a 'lower middle weight' - somewhere like Milan or Geldre that isn't at once hopeless and has possibility but won't get things handed to them. European for preference (though I'm flexible) and from either the Mongol Hordes mod or the regular/AGCEEP 1419 one.

So any help anyone?

Judging by your great Munster AAR I think you'll do a great job with any country, win or lose. But since you asked for recommendations here is my advice. :D

Try Savoy. I finished a GC with them recently and it was a very nice game. With both French and Italian culture you have a lot of potential but it doesn't come for free. And there's nothing quite as satisfying as beating up the French. :D You also get some pretty good monarchs and commanders. I was pleasantly surprised.

Good luck and I await your next AAR, whatever country you choose.

Thanks for the praise and the idea. :)

'Course since I know nothing about Savoyards in real life the natives would be pretty much Irish with French or Itallian) names... ;)

Baden! :D

...okay, seriously, Mecklenburg's nice, you even have a CoT. Have to be careful for those first few years, but after that, and especially if you can grab some more land, it shouldn't be too much trouble.

In northern Germany I would recommend Bremen or Mecklenburg. Bremen's close to a CoT and Mecklenburg of course has one. In Eastern Europe, Pommern, Poland and Lithuania, or the Teutonic Knights are all challenging.

Naples is fun to play and Savoy is potentially quite strong. Or try one of the duchies of France.

For Mongol Hordes, England would be interesting. Yeah, they start out fairly large and actually get one or two things handed to them....but then events will come along to rip them away just as fast. In MES I think England definitely promises the most wild ride.

Otherwise, for MES the Byzantines/Eastern Roman Empire - yeah, they start out in pretty good shape, but again the event file promises a wild ride.

In the standard GC...hmm, I like Mecklenberg actually for the reasons Judas suggested. You could actually do worse than Baden, just break the vassalage to Austria ASAP. Hm...the Teutons, though you'll want to look at their event file to figure out how to prevent their breakup.

It depends what type of story you want to tell in your AAR. If you want to have a historic basis then you have to watch the history of the country. Countries that disappear soon are no good for that, but sometimes small countries have fascinating histories. See if you want to explore and colonize. Sometimes you can start with a central idea, like recently the kingdom of Prester John, who could give a great Portugal AAR, or an equally great Ethiopian AAR.

My personal recommendation would be Bohemia. In vanilla is quite easy if you keep one of your big neighbors in your alliance from start. In AGCEEP is extremely tough at the beginning, when the Hussites throw everybody against you, and then it becomes much easier if you survive the onslaught. They have a unique blend of cultures and rich enough provinces. Since they start without ports and located in the heart of Europe your path is clear: Conquer by sword and diplomacy on land.
