Hey all,

Didn't feel it appropriate to post in the main forum, even if there are no active AARs...

Just wanted to advertise it in the main forum though, feel free to see it here

Cheers!

Just wanted to say I've picked up where I left off quite a few months ago!

The game has reached mid-1945, and I've now posted the story for the rest of 1940, and am currently writing up the adventures of 1941. It has been, and continues to be, an epic campaign!

I am to publish the update for 1942 by Valentine's Day.

I aim to publish the follow-up - 1943 - by the end of this month. There is so much to cover for this campaign, it is so gripping to research, even for me - someone who has been part of it in some way or another for most of the way!

Gods the allies are taking a kicking. Their finally got a more realistic production balance by the end of the year but their land and air losses are horrendous. Even with Indian and Chinese manpower to back up the US its going to be a long haul and I suspect it will end with a lot of nuclear weapons being used. Japan from its IC is looking spent so could get steadily weaker but there are some good bonuses for the defence and I don't know what Japan has left so it could take a while yet but it could still take at least a year or two while the Axis forces, especially since the Germans don't seem to be heavily involved in the ground combat this year are digging in and getting stronger. [The eastern front seems very quiet this year or did you leave that out?] Italy seems to have borne the brunt of the fighting in Africa so they could be running low on MP.

When you showed the Axis transport and escort losses there was nothing on the Atlantic. Coupled with that Britain has a healthy IC total does that mean the allies have won the battle there already?

Steve

Hey Steve, thanks for your comments. It is a closely fought war so far!

As there are player agreed limitations to the use of Chinese & Indian forces outside of Asia, their influence on the war is limited (but China still has the Korean frontline, and Taiwan sits closely by too), and Indian forces can be used in most of Asia, a lot still up for the taking.

Japan, as of 6 January 1944, has the 2nd biggest army in the Axis - so it's still a force to be reckoned with!

It really was all quiet on the eastern front for 1943, the Heer spent much of it resting. However a big problem facing Germany is a severe lack of oil, a problem it's had since mid-1942. Some examples, and a list of Germany's battles for part of 1942 and all of 1943 are listed below:-

Germany-low-on-oil.png

Italy, as of 6 January 1944, has just 10,100 men it can call upon in reserve.

The Axis war on shipping hasn't been worth much of a mention, but here are their achievements (and losses) so far:-

Mr B

Many thanks, That makes it sound closer than I was fearing. Provided the allies don't run out of men 1st and can get nukes before Germany does they have a decent change of coming out on top. Italy sounds fairly spent so other Axis allies - who are likely to be less powerful - and ultimately the Germans are going to have to put more men on the line. Coupled with a still existing - albeit currently fairly quiet - eastern front and the oil shortage that could put them under a lot of pressure.

Given the oil shortage are the very heavy allied air losses more a case of AA units than defensive fighters or is Germany putting most of its oil into the air defence? If its not giving too much away.

So a lot of fighting still in the FE with Japan having a powerful army but very limited economy. Suspect that on the mainland China is going to bear the brunt of wearing that down given its own massive manpower reserves.

Anyway, very interesting. Makes me want to get on the AoD bike again but got so busy with other things and games. :(

Between 14.01.43 and 06.01.44 the air losses were:-

RAF - 1,498 fighter planes & 1,630 bombers
USAAF - 1,704 fighter planes & 3,171 bombers

VVS - 849 fighters & 135 bombers

Luftwaffe - 503 fighters & 334 bombers
Regia Aeronautica - 1,026 fighter planes & 418 bombers
IJAAF - 432 fighter planes & 341 bombers
RAAF (Axis) - no fighters & 1,195 bombers

Inflicted air losses for the same period:-

RAF - 1,010 fighter planes & 1,095 bombers
USAAF - 712 fighter planes & 1,397 bombers

VVS - 700 fighter planes & no bombers

Luftwaffe - 875 fighter planes & 727 bombers
Regia Aeronautica - 1,235 fighters & 1,164 bombers
IJAAF - 1,432 fighters & 1,695 bombers

-------------

Unfortunately air battles are not recorded in AoD histories, but I believe a lot of the bomber (and some fighter plane) losses from the Allies are from bombing Axis troops. While no AA brigades have been attached to any units, 1943 infantry do have an air attack of 4.

Thank you for your questions, I'll now be adding a little section on the state of Italy at the start of 1944 thanks to them.

Well, we expect our campaign to end in the coming weeks (or perhaps a couple of months, quite hard to tell), you're always welcome to join us. We normally only play once a week (which tends to be weekends atm).

Many thanks for the info and looking forward to seeing how things develop. Heavy losses especially for the US and I wonder how bearable they are. Were the RAAF bombers a legacy of when Oz was allied or has Australia become the prime bomber production centre for Japan for some reason - possibly closer to oil supplies.

Thanks for the offer but I would be way out of my depth. Haven't played for ~3 years now, last game being on v1.10 and as a micromanager by the time I got a game or two under my belt the version had changed. As such apart from one brief go at Germany I only really played Russia - no great naval or air demands and only really one front - at least against the AI. Tend since the Germans don't attack until roughly the historical time to concentrate on the economy and then mass build from late 1940 with a just in time defensive position so would very likely be a total disaster in a multi-player game. Which is a pain as I initially got involved due to reading Trekaddict's AAR where he has the British empire against just about everything else and would have loved to have the experience to try a variant of that but that's never going to happen. Plus my one regular gaming session with a mate is Saturday evening going into Sunday morning and although as we get older its not as long as we used to do it tends to mean the weekend is pretty much booked up, between that and trying to recover. ;)

Anyway thanks and hopefully I'm not taking up too much time with the questions.

Not at all, please ask away! I enjoy researching this epic campaign :D

Having annexed and then creating Australia as a completely new puppet state from 9 May 1940, the Axis got it to produce tactical bombers to help with the war at sea (Japan wasn't going for naval bombers, so only had the 1938 variant, whereas 1940 TAC was available). As of 6 January 1944, it has 16 tactical bombers (making it the largest of such force in the Axis). It also has 14 militia divisions, mainly in response to the Allied invasions in the area. Oil appears to be an issue for Australia too, but I imagine that was considered the "most impactful" unit Australia could build given it's low MP and relatively high IC.

You could always experiment with a minor (Canada, Hungary, Romania, Manchukuo etc) if you did join. You wouldn't need to attend every session as we use a mod where the AI handles itself well (and we could always sub you to ensure the AI does not divert your production/research etc). But it does sound like you are a very busy man!

Mr B

Thanks for the reply. Not really busy, more of a professional layabout since I took VR about a decade back. Other than helping out at a local day centre which is closed at the moment I do very little other than things on the computer - some favourite sites and too much gaming. However do have this session on a Saturday evening/night and at my age [61] tend to need most of Sunday to recover so the weekend is rather closed.

Also my other concern is that since its the sort of game that plays continuously rather than being turn based that would mean all players have to be active at the same time. Coupled with the fact I have an older PC - my religious principles as a devout miser ;) - so it might not be up to it. I generally play stratagy games with the sound off and minimal graphics so don't need a top rank performance. Plus as a bit [lot ] of a dinosaur what would be involved software wise in such games? Speaking as someone who has never used zoom, facebook, twitter etc.

Steve

We use Steam, which is a free software, to communicate and organise our sessions - and we also have a dedicated website too. I was able to play it using a laptop from 2009, which I'd bought purely for playing AoD online! Part of the beauty of the game is its simplicity, it has minimal requirements for playing, and does not require a fast internet connection either.

If you did join us I'm not sure you'd be the oldest miser in the group ;)

Interesting. I don't have the game via Steam to but I have since got that for other games so should be able to set something up. How long a session do you have. [Clearly displaying the twitch of a serious addition:eek:] Might be tempted by Canada as it would ease me in and with advice from the UK and US player could hopefully aid the allies and avoid a sudden nasty invasion. As I say however since my mate still works I wouldn't be available on a Saturday evening - we play from about 8pm onward.

Is it OK having this discussion here or would it be better by private message/mail?

Steve

Good idea, I've just messaged you privately :)

For anyone wanting to try and create an alternative history for this German Reich, I invite you! We'd need someone to play the USA, managing all of the Allied forces, and someone to be Germany. If there are three of us, someone can manage the Red Army too. I'd preferably be Germany, but could instead be the USSR if there are 3 of us and someone wants Germany, but I cannot play the USA for reasons that will become apparent in future updates of the AAR ;)

Here is the save as of 26 August 1944 - when the Allies are on the verge of winning the D-Day battles. You might be able to load it, but you wouldn't be able to run it without our particular version of the Improved 1936 mod.

For all interested, pleased message me and we'll see what we can do.

Updated it to include the start of World War 3, at least in Europe anyhow!
