The AI is no match for a human player in many regards. I have proposals for three changes regarding the warfare side of the game: the fort capturing/recapturing, asssaulting fortresses and retreating from naval battles. In game now this means you have a huge advantage or have to play by the same rules as the AI, including:
1. Move on directly after capturing a province (and don´t move your army back to defend the captured province if the enemy besiege it)
2. Never abort an assault, even if infantry strength drops to zero.
3. Never retreat from a naval battle even if you will lose the entire fleet, unless directly after the first 5 days of combat if you´re greatly outnumbered.
1. The fort capturing/recapturing. I wonder if something can be done about garrisons in captured provinces. Making AI armies stay longer OR increase garrison size after capture would be nice, but I could happily see both. As it stands, it is silly to leave just 100 garrison soldiers in any captures province. Especially since the AI moves their armies straight away and this makes recapture easy. Making armies stay longer in captured provinces, for some of the time, would be nice. Some rebels do this, for a few months at least, so it can be done. I also think that it would be good if the garrison size were to be increased after capture. To make them full stength would be equally silly as leaving a mere 100 men, so perhaps like a base of 250 + 25% of total fortsize could work. That means 500 in a level 1 fort province and 1500 in a level 5 fort province.
2: Assaulting. This one is pretty simple, just make the AI able to abort an assault or prevent the human player form doing it. Why not use the battle rule of 5 days unable to retreat the same for assaults, if the AI can be made to understand this.
3. Retreating form naval battles. Also straightforward, the AI can pretty effectively retreat from land battles, so it should not be hard to make them not waste their entire fleet just because it was initially a pretty even fight. Make the AI understand how to retreat anytime during the battle, as they now only retreat directly after the first 5 days when greatly outnumbered.
I think these proposals can make those parts of the game more interesting and challenging, which I see as a good thing. They can be argued for from an historical standpoint (to more or less extent), but gameplay is my main reason. Any thoughts on the ideas?
