I want to give it a shot. Anything I should know going in? I would like to start with a shortbow on my create character. Does this sound like a viable option? I have heard other games similar to this are not always friendly with every class type.

Any tips is great.

I haven't used an archer (your first companion can dual-wield or go archery, and I went dual-wield), but enemy archers are quite capable.

As for what to know going in... The lesson I'm fixated on is that just because a character isn't a mage doesn't mean they shouldn't cast spells. Support spells (especially healing spells if you can buy or have a companion teach you the healing skill) are quite handy on everyone, and their poor accuracy from having weak skills won't matter so much.
